Pelicans Beat Cavaliers in Thriller

Percy Davis

December 4, 2015, the Cleveland Cavaliers faced the New Orleans Pelicans. This game was a battle to the finish, going into overtime to decide who would win the game.

Cleveland led the first quarter 27-21 but Anthony Davis and the Pelicans weren’t going away quietly. They ended the half only down by one point at 53-52.

Late in the fourth quarter the Pelicans went up by 10 points on the Cavaliers but superstar LeBron James wasn’t going down without a fight. He scored 21 of Cleveland’s last 24 points and also made the shot to put his team into overtime. James finished with 37 points, eight assist and 23 of those 37 points came in the fourth quarter.

Although James had an amazing fourth quarter it wasn’t quite enough to stop Anthony Davis and The Pelicans who won the game 114-108 in overtime.

After losing three straight games, the LSU Tigers finally snapped that losing streak. The Tigers started the season off being undefeated before losing those three games. Saturday, November 28th the Tigers beat the Texas A&M Aggies 19-7.

LSU’s running back Leonard Fournette ran for an astonishing 159 yards and one touchdown. He now has the single-season rushing record at 1,741 yards surpassing Charles Alexander’s 1,686 mark.

Over the last couple of weeks there has been speculation that coach Les Miles would no longer be head coach for the Tigers. Miles has been head coach since 2005 and has a record of 111 victories and only 32 defeats. After losing three straight games his job as head coach was up for discussion but all the speculation went out the window once he defeated the Aggies.

The game started out neck and neck with the Aggies winning the first quarter 7-6. The Tigers put the first points on the board, scoring on two field goals from kicker Trent Domingue. Shortly after that Aggie quarterback, Kyle Allen put together an 80 yard drive to score on a eight yard touchdown to Ricky Seals-Jones.

The second quarter was strictly defense with neither team putting any points on the board.

In the second half the Tigers came out rolling! They scored a touchdown in each quarter and their defense held the Aggies to a scoreless half. The first touchdown was from Derrius Guice on a 50-yard rush. The second touchdown came from Leonard Fournette on a four-yard sprint. The LSU Tigers now have an 8-3 record on the season and are looking to close out the season on a good note by winning their next game, a bowl game.

November 14, 2015 the Arkansas Razorbacks shocked the world with an upset victory against the # 9 LSU Tigers. The Razorbacks came out rolling early, scoring on a 52-yard pass from Brandon Allen to Dominique Reed. The first quarter ended with the score at 7-0, Arkansas leading.

In the second quarter the Razorbacks kept the momentum going, scoring on an 80-yard rushing touchdown by Alex Collins. LSU couldn’t get anything going and kept turning the ball over on downs. Shortly after that Alex Collins scored another touchdown on a 5-yard carry. This put the Razorbacks ahead of the Tigers 21-0.

The Tigers scored before the first half of football ended but it wasn’t quite enough to win the game. The Razorbacks won the game 31-14 giving the LSU Tigers their second loss back to back. Heisman candidate Leonard Fournette struggled once again, only rushing for 91 yards on 17 carries and scoring one touchdown. The Razorbacks running back Alex Collins finished the game with 141 yards on 16 carries and two touchdowns.

The Tigers quarterback Brandon Harris was sacked five times, finishing the game with 271 yards on 21 completions out of 35 and one touchdown. The Razorbacks quarterback Brandon Allen had 141 passing yards and added two touchdowns to help his team get the victory over the Tigers.

Needless to say it was not a pretty day for the LSU Tigers in their home stadium, now referred to as Death Valley.

November 7, 2015 was the day many LSU and Alabama fans were awaiting. This rivalry has been going on since 1865 with LSU getting the first victory over Alabama. Although LSU won the first game, Alabama has won 50 of the 80 games played since, with LSU winning 25 and the other 5 draws.

Saturday with the Alabama Crimson Tide hosting, they beat the LSU Tigers 30 – 16, giving the Tigers their first lost of the season. Coming into the game LSU had the upper hand with the top leading rusher Leonard Fournette. He has rushed for 1,383 yards with 16 touchdowns through only 8 games.

Fournette was smothered by Alabama’s defense led by coach Nick Saban, rushing for only 31 yards on 19 attempts. Before this game his lowest yard total was 154 yards against Western Kentucky.

Alabama’s Derrick Henry on the other hand rushed for 210 yards with three touchdowns on 38 carries. Alabama’s quarterback Jake Coker played well passing for 184 yards and completing 18 of his 24 passes thrown.

The first quarter of football was a defensive game with neither team scoring. In the second quarter the Crimson Tide got on the board first with a 22-yard field goal by Adam Griffith. The Tigers then turned the ball over on downs and the Crimson Tide went down and scored a 2-yd rushing touchdown by Derrick Henry.

With the score 10-0 at this point the Tigers knew they needed to put some points on the board before the game got out of reach. The Tigers quarterback Brandon Harris went down and threw a 40-yd touchdown to wide receiver Travin Dural making the score 10-7.

Alabama got the ball back and turned it over on downs and the Tigers marched down the field and settled for a 39-yard field goal by Trent Dominque. The score was now tied at 10-10 and the LSU Tigers started to regain their confidence from being down 10-0. Alabama, not wanting to lose the momentum, marched down the field with time running out and kicked a 55-yard field with only 14 seconds left on the clock. Going into halftime the score was 13-10 Alabama’s way and most people would have thought we had a good game on our hands.

In the third quarter the Crimson Tide was rolling! With the Tigers getting the ball at halftime, Brandon Harris came out and threw an interception on the first play of the half. This was Harris’s first interception on the season and it was definitely a game changer. Alabama scored 14 points in the third quarter to LSU’s 0 points making the score 27-10 entering the fourth quarter.

The Tigers scored one touchdown in the fourth quarter and Crimson Tide added a field goal to their score. Ending the game at 30-16 with Alabama Crimson Tide coming out on top giving the LSU Tigers their first loss of the season.

Why Should I attend your University?

University AppRather you are a potential NFL prospect or simply just a student trying to get a degree, the first question your going to ask yourself is which University’s should I attend.

Most students have parents, grandparents, or other role models to help them make the decision on which university they should attend. Others aren’t as fortunate to have such great people in their lives so that’s why each university has a recruiting specialist.

The recruiting specialist job is to recruit students to the university that they are employed with.

This process of recruitment takes time and goes by many different steps.

The first step would be to Identify prospective student.

This process can be done through going to different high schools and visiting with the students. Also by attending college fairs and having campus visits.

The recruitment specialist will make many phone inquiries, e-mail inquiries, and things along that line.

Recruitment specialist will also have large events on campus such as an open house, meet and greet events, and group tours.

This allows the students to get to know the university better and also interact with other students at the university.

At these events the university and recruitment specialist will offer prizes, give away goody bags, and have different events going on such as a live band or games to play.

Some recruiters such as global recruiters have more duties and get the opportunity to travel around the world. Global recruiters are trying to get more international students in their university to create more diversity for the university.

“It is important that growing universities internationalize their student population in order to maintain a strong position in our globalized world and I aid in that effort,” International Global Recruitment Specialist Jennifer Felps said.

The global recruitment specialists at Texas A&M Texarkana are part of the Study Texas consortium. Which allows them to travel to different countries across the world in order to recruit students.

The next step for a recruitment specialist is to identify what the prospective student is wanting in a college. Such as a degree program, class size, career opportunities, etc.

By figuring this out the recruitment specialist knows what they need to focus on and what they need to focus on less in order to get that student enrolled in their university.

For example if a student is having pricing concerns and that is that students main concern then the recruitment specialist would mainly focus on trying to help that student get grants, scholarships, and loans.

Next the recruiter will inform the student on how their university can help them achieve their goals while gaining the full college experience.

For example there are two college programs in the city of Texarkana, one being Texas A&M Texarkana and the other being Texarkana College.

With Texarkana College being only a two year University a recruiter from Texas A&M may tell the student that they wouldn’t be able to get a bachelors degree or masters degree at Texarkana College and also wouldn’t be able to grasp the full college experience seeing how it is only a two year university.

On the other hand a recruiter at Texarkana College may tell a student that from a financial stand point their college is quite a bit cheaper than Texas A&M Texarkana and that they could always transfer afterwards.

The next process would be for the recruiter to assist the students with the admissions process from start to finish.

By doing so it establishes a relationship between the student and the recruiter. It also makes the student feel as if the recruiter cares about the their well being and isn’t just trying to recruit the student but actually help the student.

Through these steps the recruiter needs to keep in constant contact with the student from beginning to end. This makes the student feel as if he or she matters, which they do matter so they should feel this way if you want that student, enrolled in your university.

Last but most definitely not least a recruiter should make that student feel comfortable with every process from prospective student to admitted student.

When asked what makes her a good recruiter this is what Mrs. Felps had to say, “I would say I am a pro when it comes to letting people know what to expect in college, how to get into college, how to do well in college, and how to look for the job after you graduate college.”

If you follow these steps on what it takes to recruit a student to your university then you should have no problems being a good recruitment specialist.

FEATURE: International Journey to Success

Percy Davis

“Success is not the key to happiness. Happiness is the key to success. If you love what you are doing, you will be successful,” Albert Schweitzer. This is a quote that Jennifer Melissa Felps took with her through this journey we call life.

Jennifer was born in the “Windy City”, better known as Chicago, Illinois.

Coming from the third most populated city in the U.S. she moved to a much smaller town by the name of Mountain Home, Arkansas.

Throughout her childhood Jennifer participated in many different extra-curricular activities. She also traveled a lot since her mother was from Ecuador. They traveled every other year to Ecuador to visit family and went various places around the U.S. on family vacations every year.

“I really had a passion to learn more about my culture, which is Ecuadorian,” Jennifer said.

After graduating from Mountain Home High School in 2005, she pursued her BA at the University of Arkansas in Fayetteville. She graduated with a degree in Communications and a minor in Latin American studies.

When looking for a graduate program, Jennifer was looking for something that specifically centered on International/Intercultural communication.

“I was very lucky to find this program at the University of Denver in Colorado. It was an exact mix of what I wanted to pursue and the exact type of environment,” Jennifer added.

In 2012 Jennifer Melissa Felps received her Master’s degree in International and Intercultural Public Relations.

While in Denver, Jennifer was part of a Distance Learning Program, a collaborative effort with the University of Denver, the Cable Center in Denver, C-Span studios in Washington DC, George Mason University, and Purdue University.

Jennifer was the graduate assistant for the University of Denver’s class, a distance learning class that focused on the mid-term elections and the makeup of the Congress at the time.

Students would get the opportunity to interact with the guests that Steve Scully had on his show in Washington DC. Scully is a senior executive producer and political editor of C-Span. Steve was the director of the class and Jennifer was his graduate assistant.

Scully would have many different guests on his show weekly, including speech writers for different presidents and also members of the media such as writers for Politico, and former CBS Evening News anchor , Dan Rather.

Jennifer was in charge of the class and her duties were to make sure that the communication was effective between the DC representatives and her students in the class. She did this for one full academic year.

“It was real cool,” Jennifer said astoundingly.

Before landing the position she holds today, Jennifer worked for the Cable Center in Denver, the Open Media Foundation, and Texarkana College.

She is currently employed at Texas A&M Texarkana with the job title of Global Recruitment Specialist.

Her position deals with marketing and recruitment for international studies.

Over time Jennifer has developed an intelligent global perspective and is an advocate of higher education. Her sincerity helps potential students feel connected to the university.

“I would say I am a pro when it comes to letting people know what to expect in college, how to get into college, how to do well in college, and how to look for the job after you graduate college.”

When asked what it takes to become a good global recruitment specialist this is what Jennifer had to say: “You must have the understanding and appreciation of the importance of intercultural/international relations, not only in a university setting but also in an everyday setting. You will also need excellent communication skills and a thorough knowledge of the university’s admission procedures.”

Jennifer thinks the key to recruiting students is trying to present a topic that the students can relate to their personal lives. She noted that communication is probably the number one aspect to becoming a recruitment specialist.

Jennifer is an extremely outgoing person and the type of person that everyone in the building would like to be around. “What I think makes me stand out from other recruitment specialist is my sincere an enthusiastic passion for higher education,” Jennifer said. “It is important that growing universities internationalize their student population in order to maintain a strong position in our globalized world and I aid in that effort.”

The Joy of Teaching

Percy K. Davis

“One of the most rewarding aspects for teaching at Texas A&M Texarkana was the quality of the students,” Associate Professor of English at Texarkana College Pamela Hesser said.

Pamela Hesser taught at A&M for one semester helping out with the journalism program. Her main focus was to help the students be better writers and help them get the online newspaper off the ground.

Before teaching at A&M, Hesser taught journalism at three other schools, Whitehouse High School, Hooks High School, and Texarkana College. She also was an assistant editor at the Texarkana Gazette where she wrote a bundle of feature stories.

When teaching at the high schools and Texarkana College she dealt with a majority of younger students who weren’t for sure what they wanted to do in life and were not as focused on journalism as she was.

“Here at Texarkana College I was teaching freshman and sophomores, some of whom are still exploring what kind of career direction they want to take.”

When you are a freshman you are just what the name says, “fresh”, so you don’t really know what you want to do in life just yet. You just graduated from high school and are making decisions without your parents telling you what decisions to make. You are out of your parents’ home and have free will to do pretty much whatever you want. So you can easily see how a freshman or even a sophomore’s focus could easily be distracted from the classroom.

“Whereas at A&M teaching juniors and seniors, they have already had time to make a pretty firm decision on what they wanted to do. So they are focused and they know what they want to learn and they take advantage of the learning opportunities,” Hesser concluded with a smile.

Bittersweet Moments for Cowboys

Percy K. Davis

“And the cowboys win the game!” The Cowboys started the year off 2-0 and won their first two division games. These wins came with a devastating cost.

In the first regular season game the Cowboys hosted the Giants in Arlington, Texas. The first quarter was a defensive stand seeing how both teams only put up 3 points. The second quarter the Giants started rolling, scoring 10 points to the Cowboys 3 points.

In the second half the Cowboys came out rolling, scoring 21 points to the Giants 13. The Cowboys won in a nail biter 27-26. Although the Cowboys won the game they lost their star receiver Dez Bryant to a broken foot injury in the 4th quarter. Bryant is said to be out for 4-6 weeks.

The following week the Cowboys were set to play another division game against their rivals the Eagles. Not only are the Eagles the Cowboys’ rivals but during the off-season the Eagles picked up the Cowboys’ starting running back Demarco Murray. Murray led the NFL in rushing yards in the 2014-2015 NFL season.

The Eagles hosted the Cowboys Sunday, September 20, 2015. The first half was a defensive game with the Cowboys only scoring 3 points in each quarter and the Eagles not scoring at all. In the beginning of the 3rd quarter the Cowboys returned a blocked punt for a touchdown, making the score 13-0.

Not too long after that, Tony Romo goes down on a pass play with broken left collarbone. The Cowboys go on to win the game 20-10 without Dez Bryant or Tony Romo.

Although the Cowboys are 2-0, it’s hard to imagine them winning any more games without their star quarterback or their star receiver, and they no longer have the NFL’s 2014-2015 leading rusher, Demarco Murray.

There’s no better way to spend your Fridays than sitting under the flashing lights watching Texas football. The Liberty Eylau Leopards hosted the Arkansas Razorbacks September 11, 2015. This game was proclaimed the game of the week. The fans surely came out and supported the two teams because the game was sold out.

With the lights shining bright and the crowd at a standstill the kickoff begun. The Leopards got off to a fast start, scoring on their very first drive. The Razorbacks’ offense didn’t seem to click well, turning the ball over on downs quickly. The Leopards’ offense took advantage of this opportunity and scored another touchdown on the drive.

At halftime the Leopards were leading the razorbacks 45-7. They played well together as a team, and as the game progressed, continued to add to their lead. No wonder they are ranked in state as number 16 and ranked nationally as number 130.

The ending score was 66-21 with the Leopards taking the win. The Leopards’ offense had a total of 835 yards. Their quarterback, Freeman, passed for a total of 317 yards with 5 touchdowns and rushed for 177 yards with one rushing touchdown.

REVIEW: Dancing @ Mr. D’s

Percy Davis

Are you tired of sitting at home wondering where the fun is? Well you don’t have to wait any longer. Mr. D’s night club awaits you. As you walk into the establishment Saturday night, all you see are flashing lights. People everywhere are dancing and having a good time.

Security is strictly enforced so violence is at a minimum. The dance floor is in the middle of the club and surrounded by tables and chairs. As you walk along the bar you step down some stairs with more free space so people can order drinks without being crowded.

The deeper you enter the club you come upon what seemed to be a door once, and four pool tables. As you go even deeper you go up some stairs into a smaller dance floor. This part of the club is for where artists perform. Right across from the small dance floor is the main dance floor were the majority of the people are. To the left of the main dance floor is another small dance floor for extra space.

The environment is the type where you can feel safe and can also have a lot of fun. The nightclub also serves food, which is very tasty. The drinks aren’t expensive so don’t worry about emptying your pockets.

The DJ plays nothing but the latest music and knows how to keep the crowd on its feet. “I said get down low and hit the quan!” The nightclub doesn’t close until 5 am so you can party all night if you want to. So next time you’re at the house bored with nothing to do, come on out to Mr. D’s and let’s have a blast!
