TAMUT Hosts Casino Night in Eagle Hall

Andy Verke Jr.

On Sunday, April 24th Eagle Hall, on the campus of Texas A&M University-Texarkana, turned into “little Las Vegas”. The room was full of blackjack tables, roulette, a craps table, and a bunch of eager students/faculty earning chips to put towards a raffle drawing.

Each person was given a cup full of colored chips and could earn black chips while playing different games. For every five regular chips, a person was given one raffle ticket. For every black chip, a person was given four raffle tickets. The casino opened up at 6p.m. and students/faculty could play until 8:30p.m. before they had to put their raffle tickets in which ever gifts they were trying to win. Some of the prizes that were available included: 20 oz. Yeti Bottle, 30 oz. Yeti Bottle, $50 gift card to Bass Pro Shops, and a $50 gift card to Texas Roadhouse.

Just as in Las Vegas, not everyone came out with a prize but everyone had a great time. There were small competitions for “table pride” between each table on which table could win the most prizes. Although there was no announced winner, every dealer at every table was proud that at least one person from their table took home a prize.

TAMUT Baseball Program Continues to Make History

Andy Verke Jr.

The Texas A&M University-Texarkana baseball team is in its inaugural season and have already set the bar high for years to come. In its first year they have gained national recognition from social media with Kenneth Fudge’s walk off grand slam epic bat flip and against Georgia Gwinnett for having fireworks going off in the middle of game two. In addition to the fame from social media, on March 15, 2016, The 2016 NAIA Baseball Coaches’ Top 25 Poll was released and the TAMUT Eagles Baseball team receiving four votes in the top 25. Now that may not sound like a big deal but for a first year program it shows what they have accomplished.

To put the cherry on top of the season, the TAMUT Baseball Team qualified for the A.I.I. (Association of Independent Institutions) Conference tournament as the #3 seed. Their first game will be on Saturday, May 7th at noon as they take on Edward Waters College (the #6 seed) out of Jacksonville, Florida.

All conference tournament games will be streamed on Grizzly Digital Network. Prices for streaming are $7.95 for a single game or $29.95 for the all tournament pass which includes every game.

There are eight teams in the double elimination tournament and the first, second, and third place teams will receive automatic qualifying bids to the NAIA Baseball Regional Tournament.

Congratulations to the TAMUT Baseball program and continue to make history.

Life of a College Baseball Player

Andy Verke Jr.

5am alarm goes off, you want to hit snooze but you know you can’t because you still need to grab a snack before morning weights at 6. 5:45 am you’re in the gym stretching with the position guys because Coach Jones always says “if you’re not 15 minutes early, you’re late!”. It’s about 7:15 am and while people are starting to wake from their nights sleep you are in the empty cafeteria getting breakfast, showering, and getting ready for day of classes.

From 9-1pm you’re busy with classes and only 15 minutes in between each class to grab a small bite to eat. Class is done for the day but you still have to go back to your dorm room, change then head to the field for early hitting at 1:30.

For the next 3-4 hours you are dialed in on baseball and paying attention to the details. During those 3-4 hours you will have a bunt scrimmage, situational hitting scrimmage, batting practice, and conditioning. Star drills… The consequence of not paying attention to detail. So what is a star drill? It is when you start at home plate and run to the center field wall, back to home plate, down the right field line to the foul pole, across the outfield to the left field foul pole, and finally back to home in two minutes and 20 seconds or less.

It’s approximately 5:30pm and you are finally done with practice and have to head back to the dorms to get dinner, shower, and gather your things to go to the library. After your dinner you head to the library to study for test, do your homework, and complete any projects you have. It’s 11pm and the library is closing but you still have to finish some of your homework, so you go to the study room in the dorms and complete your homework for the night.

By the time you get done with your homework it’s 12:30 and you have to be up in four and a half hours to do it all again.

It takes a lot of discipline and sacrifice, but I wouldn’t change a thing.

Livin’ The Island Style

Andy Verke, Jr.

The island style is a laid back, slow-paced lifestyle. It is commonly found in the islands of Hawaii. The people of Hawaii are known to be the most friendliest people in the world. We have a vast amount of ethnic background which makes it one of the more unique places in the world as well. The majority of the ethnic backgrounds are from Asia.

There are eight total islands but visitors and locals can only visit six of the eight. One of the islands, Ni`ihau, require special qualifications in order to visit the island because they live solely off the land and have no technological advancements. The other island, Kaho`olawe, is used for military target practice. Majority of the people who come to visit the islands of Hawaii stay on the island of O`ahu. There are plenty of activities to participate in, such as: Hiking, scuba diving, going to the beach, etc.

Since Hawaii is made up of a vast amount of different ethnic cultures, the culture of Hawaii takes different aspects of other cultures and adapts it as their own. For example, before entering someone’s house you remove your footwear as a sign of respect; this comes from the Japanese. Whenever there is a family party or a party in general, everyone is required to bring or make something so they do not come empty-handed. On a side note, you will never leave a party in Hawaii hungry. More often than not, there will be enough food leftover for everyone to take home with them. The idea of everyone bringing or making a lot of food comes from the Filipinos because their culture is centered around family. The one tradition that has stuck in Hawaii from the start is the idea of “Spreading da aloha”. Aloha basically means to treat others the way you want to me treated. Family…Family is what the Culture of Hawaii is all about. They are the one’s who have been with you from the start and they will always stick with you through everything that you go through. Your family will always be there for you to fall back on when you need help to get back on your feet.

The island style is a laid back, slow-paced lifestyle. The average speed limit on the freeways around the island is 50 miles per hour, as where in the continental United States, the average is approximately 65 miles per hour. Besides from the workplace or school, whether or not you are on time is socially acceptable. There is a saying “I not late, I stay on Hawaiian time!” and Hawaiian time is slow and at your own pace. Also to the island lifestyle is going to the beach every weekend and enjoying time off from reality and being with family and friends. Majority of the people in Hawaii does not speak the native Hawaiian language but a broken english called pidgin. Pidgin is a mix of German, Filipino, and Japanese which was created in the sugar cane fields; It was recently recognized as an official language.

Because Hawaii is a culturally diverse place, we have a lot of different types of foods ranging from everywhere around the world. The most common type of imported foods that we have are from Asia. We still have the places that sell your typical Hawaiian food such as Poke (po-kay) raw fish, Lomi Salmon (Salmon and tomatoes), Kalua Pig (steamed pork butt), Lau Lau (Chicken/pork and fish wrapped in a luau leaf). There are many more foods that could be described but I have listed the most common foods you will typically find. Some of the best Asian foods are found in Hawaii simply because we do have Asian immigrants who come to Hawaii and bring their culture with them.

Hawaii has also produced multiple world-class athlete’s as well. Some of them include Brian Clay (Track and Field), Shane Victorino (Baseball), Marcus Mariota (Football), and Olin Kruetz (Football). From generation to generation, Hawaii produced some of the greatest athletes in the world but also a few Hollywood stars such as: Bruno Mars (Singer), Dwayne The Rock Johnson (Actor), and Yvonne Elliman (Singer).

In conclusion, Hawaii is one of the world’s wonders and it is definitely a place that everyone needs to visit before they pass on. Hawaii has the friendliest people you will ever meet in your life. We are also known for having some of the best food in the world. It is a very unique place, in the fact that, no matter what everyone is treated with respect. The only thing that the locals of Hawaii ask is that you clean up after yourself and that you respect the culture. The culture includes: all sacred grounds, the lava fields, the ocean, the beaches, and its people.

Holly Holm Routs Rousey

Andy Verke Jr.

“The longer she can make the fight go, the better the chance Holly has because she’s gone long many times in her career”. Holly Holm took total control of the UFC Women’s Bantamweight Champion fight from the get go by sticking to her game plan of keeping her distance. It almost looked like Holm could do whatever she wanted to Ronda Rousey.

Rousey tried to change momentum by taking down Holm, but Holm defended well and landed a few solid punches and kicks to the obliques on Rousey. With a minute to go in the first round, Rousey landed a hard left hook that dazed Holm. Then Holm changed levels and took Rousey down. With approximately 10 seconds left, they traded knees in the clinch and the round ended. Holly Holm won round 1, 10-9.

In the second round, Holm continued her domination with a combination of lefts and head kicks. Early in the 2nd round, Holm landed a devastating left followed up with a head kick that knocked out the, now, former UFC women’s bantamweight champion Ronda Rousey.

Holly Holm was suddenly the new UFC Women’s Bantamweight Champion.

Eagles Nearly Edge Top Seed Team

Andy Verke Jr.

“Ashford is being pushed to the edge by this unknown team from Texas…The Eagles have come to Lawrenceville and impressed everyone!” In its first post-season eligible year, Texas A&M University-Texarkana woman’s soccer team advanced all the way to the semi-final round in the A.I.I. Conference tournament. The Eagles season came to an end after a hard-fought match against the #1 seed Ashford University (3-2).

Ashford University took total control of the game by scoring 2 goals within the first 18 minutes but the Eagles kept on fighting back and Michelle Lee (FR) found the back of the net minutes later. Lee’s goal would make the game 2-1 going into halftime.

In the 56th minute, Michelle Lee would provide Samantha Sharpnack-Isom (SO) a great through ball and Sharpnack-Isom took care of the rest by drilling it into the back of the net tying the game up. Unfortunately for the Eagles, Ashford University caught a break in the 82nd minute and took the lead 3-2.

The goal in the 82nd minute seemed to be just enough to hold off the relentless pursuit from the Eagles. The Eagles finished the season 10-6-1.

The Eagles made the 1st post-season appearance in school history and recorded their first post-season win.

“This season has definitely been one for the books. We created something special last year and continued to make history for our university this year. Making it to the semi-finals of the A.I.I. Conference tournament was something we definitely earned. We came to Lawrenceville and made a statement as a team. It may be the end for the seniors, but it is not the end for this amazing team. I am sad my soccer career is over, but I would not change a thing about what we accomplished as a team within the last couple of years. This program is going to continue making history and I am proud to say I was an Eagle. Dalé Eagle!!” Leslie Arietta (SR).

Congratulations to the TAMUT Eagles Woman’s Soccer team on a great season!

Dalé Eagles!!

The second half wasn’t any different from the first half. Michelle Lee (FR/Frisco, TX) also found the back of the net in the 61st minute (5-1). Nightmare Trip to American Dream

Andy Verke and Leslie Arietta

Have you ever wondered about the hardships people endure trying to sneak into America? Thursday night, October 22nd Texas A&M University-Texarkana held a film event in the Eagle Hall in honor of Hispanic Heritage week. Special guest director, Ramon Hamilton, presented his award-winning film SMUGGLED.

As the event began Dr. Rincon welcomed everyone and gave a brief introduction about Ramon Hamilton. Hamilton took over and gave the audience his perspective of his film and a brief bio on himself before the film began. He was inspired to create this film because of the smuggling experiences his mother and friends endured.

10-year-old Miguel and his mother attempt to sneak into America by way of a compartment under a tour bus. With nothing but little water, food, medicine, and a Gameboy to keep them occupied, Miguel and his mother remain hopeful they will be reunited with their husband/father. Their trip gets even more difficult within the last few hours of their bus ride.

Miguel is abruptly awoken by a nightmare and accidentally breaks his mother’s last bottle of insulin. Without her insulin, she will not be able to live much longer. A couple of hours later she gives Miguel a piece of paper with the address to his father’s house and decides to get some rest. When Miguel wakes up from his sleep, he tries to wake his mother and finds that she has passed away.

To make matters worse, the tour bus breaks down on the highway, forcing the passengers to switch buses. When help arrives, Miguel uses what little English he knows to yell for help. As the guy opens the compartment, he makes a run for it and gets away. Eventually he ends up being caught and interrogated by the cops for shoplifting at a grocery store. After being interrogated and barely speaking a word, Officer Salmon takes Miguel in his car and drops him off in the middle of nowhere forcing Miguel to find his father’s house on his own.

Throughout the struggles Miguel faced on his journey, he finds his father’s house and is reunited with him.

SMUGGLED won 5 awards and was selected for 10 more awards.
