Final Advice for Finals Week

Laney Davis

Success! The Fall semester is ending, and the sweet smell of Winter Break is upon us. Like most students, I am sure that your coffee in take level has tripled in the past month, and your ability to study for two tests in one night has perfected. Whether your preferred method of achieving an A is cram studying, spacing your studying out, or not studying at all, hopefully these tips will help you achieve victory over the Fall semester’s finals week.

My first tip to potential studiers is to find the best place for you to study. Many students do not study in their room because it can be distracting. How many times have you started studying and ended up in bed watching Netflix? The best place for students to study is somewhere quiet with no distractions. If the library freaks you out then go somewhere less intimidating like Starbucks.

Second, study groups can be a really great method of studying. That is, if your groups’ intent is to be productive. It can be an easy way to get distracted and off topic if you are in a group that does not have the same drive or desire for success. One of my favorite things to do in a group is split up material. You spend less time researching and more time studying the material.

My third tip is to get some sleep! If you have a minute of time to rest do not take it for granted. Sleep deprivation can make your stress worsen and ability to focus fuzzy.

My last tip is not to not put studying off on the back burner. All students make jokes about procrastination. Unless you want to be pulling “all nighters” every night of finals week, do not postpone opening your books. The more time you put in with your head in the books and not watching Netflix is another minute that you can sleep or spend time with friends.

As a senior I have indeed learned some of these tips the hard way. Not all of these tips may help you, but hopefully it will help ease the stress of the 2015 Fall semester ending. For more tips or questions feel free to leave a comment below. “Happy finals week and may the odds be ever in your favor!”

What is a Lazy Day?

Leslie Arietta

The rain is dripping against the window and I am covered underneath a bundle of blankets and my body print is sinking into the memory foam of the bed. The room is dark and cozy while watching television. Three movies later and there is no telling what time it is.

That sounds like the perfect lazy day right? Well that was the description of a day I wish I had, but unfortunately I had to get back to reality because there is no time for a lazy day in my life. Finals are around the corner and the semester is over in less than two weeks. Thanksgiving break is over and it is time to hit the books and get in any last minute assignments or studying.

Being a college student, lazy days do not exist for me anymore. I cannot just sit around all day and do nothing because I feel like I am falling behind on life. If I am not going to school I am working and if I am not working I am doing homework or work around the house. I remember when I used to have nothing to do and had unlimited free time and lazy days. Being an adult, I continue to do something productive and I am used to having a busy schedule.

What is a lazy day anymore? I wish I knew what it felt like to have a lazy day, but unfortunately the older you get the less time you have to relax. Even if I want to try to relax anymore I cannot just sit around and not be productive. I appreciate the short nap times I get throughout the day, but I am a busy bee and will continue to be throughout my college career. Adulthood has definitely hit me and every since I have been non stop busy, but I make the best of it and get things done.

Holiday Season is Upon Us

Alyssa Bertrand

The holiday season is supposed to be the happiest time of the year. Some people, including me, truly believe that there is a reason for the season. That reason is not shopping or making sure one has the latest gadget. The reason is family. The reason is the great birth. The reason is to be thankful for all the great blessings that you have received over the year. The people on the other side think that it is the way one should act or behave in this time of year.

As a retail worker, I see many people throughout the day and all year round. These people can be nice one day but the next time you see him or her, they act completely different depending on the time of the year. Many people seem to undergo a system change as soon as the clock strikes midnight on the night of Halloween. The ones that hold on to shopping and the gifts tend to have a switch on them that changes their whole personality throughout the year. This time of the year really makes me wonder what is going through the heads of those people.

Thanksgiving is this week and Christmas is just a short four weeks away. This is the time of the year when one should be able to sit around the table with one’s family, able to enjoy the time together and give thanks for all the good and even bad in one’s life. Instead, people are more worried about the newest television or the better gaming system that one has to have. Do those people think about the ones that want to be home for the holidays? Do they think about the ones having to work those long shifts to make them happy? I doubt that. Most of the people are shopping on thanksgiving and black Friday, do not care as long as one can get what they want, for a what they think is a cheaper price.

This holiday season, take time to thank your family, friends, and even your professors for being there and for guiding you through the semester. If you go shopping, take time to thank to workers. You are out because you are wanting to be out there, they are out because they have no choice. Be respectful during this time. Do not spend you time being rude or ungrateful this season. Follow the famous words, “Don’t forget the reason for the season”.

“Being a woman ain’t for the faint of heart” –Anonymous

When I was younger I admired my mother for her beauty. I watched her sweep on her ruby lipstick, fix her hair, and go about her daily task with the grace of 1,000 goddesses.

I wanted to be her—to slide my feet into a pair of heels, paint my face with a million different hues, and dare the sun not to shine my way. Repeatedly she would tell me “don’t rush baby-girl” or “baby-girl you’ll never need this stuff, you are beautiful without it”. I had a love hate relationship with the pet name “baby-girl”. I didn’t want to be a baby! I wanted to be a glamorous woman just like my mother.

It was not until I got a bit older that I began to recognize what her makeup was covering. The worry lines caused by outside and inside pressures, the blemishes and scars that never seemed to fade away. Not until I was older did I start to notice the growing pile of fitness and beauty magazines she seemed to read as if they were bibles. I eventually followed suit, reading article after article on what it meant to be a woman or what a “real woman” looks like. Nothing covered what was inside the mind of a real woman, only what her appearance consist of, and my mother’s words rang in my mind as I turned each page “don’t rush baby-girl”.

I did not realize what she was really trying to teach me until now.

To be a young woman still means my body is not my own, and it is considered brave for me to think so—and speak up.

Sexual assault is an act not taken seriously enough. Assault comes in several forms including forced sexual behavior, and uninvited touch.

According to a recent study conducted by CNN, 23% of women have been sexually assaulted on college campuses. Every 1 in only 3 women on college campuses is assaulted in some manner every year. This does not even cover the vast amount of assaults that go unreported. Why?

Though some may argue that society is evolving, its attitude toward women has yet to make a complete 360. Girls are still being taught to not be distractions for young boys, reiterating the lesson that her body is not her own. Instead it is an object that at any time can be hyper sexualized and it is her duty to maintain its purity.

Recently this concept has been taken to the extreme. A story covered by Msnbc.com focused on the shame suit epidemic.

A shame suit is an outfit given to students who break the dress code at their school, and are loud colors intended to bring attention to their deviance. The story featured on Msnbc discussed a young girl who was told her skirt was to short and therefore distracting. The school called for a skirt to only be 3 inches above the knee—her skirt was 4. According to policy, the student was supposed to be given the option to call home for a change of clothes; however, this option was not presented to her and she was given the shame suit to wear instead. Ultimately, she ended up being picked up early from school after breaking down to tears to the point of hyperventilation.

Shame suits are growing in their popularity as schools claim that they are buckling down on their dress code procedures. These procedures however, most often target young girls who are then labeled as distractions.

These shame suits are a disgrace, and are a reminder to our young girls that it is their job not to bring the attention of boys. Boys who turn into young men are therefore learning that it is not their fault if they assault a young lady—it is her fault for wearing provocative clothing.

For the record, a young man can be provoked from a young lady wearing a brown paper bag if she as much smiles in his direction.

A short video shot by Dailymail.co.uk proves that very point.

In a short video, a hidden camera follows women walking through the city of New York, as they are being cat called by various men. None of these women respond to the cat calls, and are either called out of their names, followed, touched, or all of the above. As this is happening, no one comes to their rescue, not one soul says a word to any of the men being disrespectful and these women are being sexually harassed in the open. Once again the video rings with the message that as a woman your body is a magnet for unwanted touch, unwanted attention and it is no fault of the man.

Then there is the other side of the coin.

Nigerian author and feminist, Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie, gave a powerful feminist speech that artist Beyonce sampled in her song “Flawless”. The author states:

“We teach girls to shrink themselves, to make themselves smaller. We say to girls, you can have ambition, but not too much. You should aim to be successful, but not too successful. Otherwise, you would threaten the man. Because I am female, I am expected to aspire to marriage. I am expected to make my life choices always keeping in mind that marriage is the most important. Now marriage can be a source of joy and love and mutual support but why do we teach girls to aspire to marriage and we don’t teach boys the same? We raise girls to see each other as competitors not for jobs or accomplishments, which I think can be a good thing, but for the attention of men. We teach girls that they cannot be sexual beings in the way that boys are.”

We live in a society where being a woman is equal to being an object and any man is allowed to stake his claim without being reprimanded; however, the second a woman chooses to claim her body as her own she is labeled as a slut, or worse.

Amber Rose is the personification of such. In October of this year, she launched her very own movement entitled “Slut Walk”. Its purpose? To let women everywhere know that yes, women are allowed to be sexual beings, and it is ok to stake claim to your own body without being shamed for it. After all, men do it all the time and are in fact congratulated for their behavior.

The movement has gained both support and of course backlash. I, for one, admire her bravery and in fact find it sad that to be a woman claiming your own body is even considered an act of bravery in the first place.

Rose’s movement has given women the courage to own themselves, telling men everywhere that no does mean no, and while you may look, you must ask to touch.

It should not be considered an act of bravery for standing up for oneself when it comes to personal space being violated. Nor should it be considered brave for a person to stake claim on her own body. This should be normal, but sadly it is not.

I will teach my daughter that her body is her own, she can say no without feeling bad about it and if she ever feels uncomfortable she is allowed to stand up for herself.

She is not an object free to be hyper sexualized and blamed for the behavior of a boy who was not taught to keep his hands to himself.

We need a sexual education revolution. Young boys need to be taught to view women as humans not objects.

It is far past time that our girls stop being blamed for being distractions.

Eat.Sleep.Soccer

Leslie Arietta

“It’s about pride; in ourselves, in our school. It’s about our love and passion for the game. And when it’s all over; when we walk off that court or field for the last time, our hearts crumble. Those tears are real. But deep down inside, we are very proud of ourselves. We will forever be what few can call ourselves…. Student Athletes.” – Quotesgram.

Being a student athlete is a life challenge. You have to be willing to stay self-disciplined and spend majority of your summer preparing for preseason not just for yourself, but for your team. You might just regret it if you are not in shape before preseason. My sport is soccer, which is during the fall so you have to be prepared to arrive two weeks early before the fall semester begins for preseason or “hell week” as athletes like to call it. During preseason my life is eat, sleep, and soccer. Sometimes I forget what a social life is during the time because my life is revolved around soccer for those two weeks until school is in session.

There is more to a student athlete than just winning the championship game or going professional. We are students before we are athletes. We choose to go to college because we want a degree. We want to be prepared for the future and learn how to excel on the field and in the classroom. We could never be athletes if we did not succeed in the classroom. We are no different than any student — we are all here for the same reason, but we have a passion for the sport we play and cannot let go of it yet. Sometimes being an athlete is our motivation for being a student. Without the grades we could not even step foot on the field or the court. Some people believe we get it easy in the classroom and get excused for missed assignments or tests, but in reality we have to work for our grades just like everyone else attending the university.

Five tips that have made me a successful student athlete many should follow: 1.) Introduce yourself to the professor at the beginning of the semester. 2.) Always sit in the first two rows of the classroom so you do not get distracted. 3.) Notify your teachers ahead of time when you will be away so you can complete any assignments you will be missing. 4.) Attend your study hours. 5.) Remember that being a student always comes before being an athlete.

Student athletes spend the majority of their time on the bus traveling. Sometimes the bus is our classroom, bedroom, and sometimes film room.  The bus is an athlete’s mobile home because we travel with our school work and bring our pillows and blanket for the long ride. If athletes are not studying on the bus we are usually sleeping or getting prepared for our game. We spend late nights on the bus and sometimes multiple days to get to our destination.

There are benefits of being a student athlete, but we are never handed anything without working for it. We earn our success on the field and in the classroom but there is always room for improvement. Being a student athlete has been a challenge, but at the end of the day we do it for the life lessons, the experience, and for our fans. We focus in the classrooms to get our degrees and we focus on the field to get our championship. This is what it takes to be a student-athlete and at the end of the day, it is all worth it.

How to Survive as a College Freshman

Jamie Williamson

College can be an intimidating time in a young person’s life. It’s a time where you are not quite considered an adult but you’re not a kid anymore. Many young adults find it challenging to balance life and a college career right out of high school. Here are some tips to help any college freshman make their first year a better experience.

Know your advisor. A bad schedule makes for a bad semester. Do not be afraid to talk to your advisor and make a schedule that works for you. It is okay to say you do not want to take a certain class that semester. You are the one who has to take the classes, not your advisor. This will also help to cut down on your stress throughout the semester.

Do not be afraid to take a class outside your chosen major. The first major you choose may not be the major you end up graduating with. College is the time to find out what you want to do with your life. Taking a class outside your major may open your eyes to a whole new area of interests and can lead to many new and exciting opportunities. It is also okay not declaring a major your first semester or year–explore different classes, because it’s your future and you need to do what makes you happy.

Get involved in campus events and activities. This will help combat homesickness and help you make new and lasting friendships. Homesickness is on of the top reasons college freshmen do not finish college right out of high school. Colleges have events to get the students involved in the community and meet new people. If you stay in your room the whole semester, you can’t fully enjoy your college experience to the fullest. College is the time to make memories and lifelong friends.

Visit the student success center or counselor if you feel overwhelmed and need extra help. The student success center has several tutors willing to help with any subject you need help with. Do not be afraid to ask for help. Everyone needs help sometime in their life. Whether its help with a paper and a severe case of writer’s block to missing family and need to talk to a counselor. Both of these services are there to help make your college career better and ensure you have a successful future.

Learn to prioritize your time for studying. Prioritizing your study time will help minimize stress when it comes time to take a test. Taking notes during class and then studying them in small amounts everyday after class will help you remember the information without trying to cram last-minute. Also studying in the daytime will help cut down on distractions and will leave your nights open for the different campus events going on.

Following all these tips will help make any new college freshman’s career a productive and successful one. These tips are sure to minimize stress and help maximize potential. College is a time to prepare for the future but it should not come at the expense of one’s sanity.

Why Should I attend your University?

University AppRather you are a potential NFL prospect or simply just a student trying to get a degree, the first question your going to ask yourself is which University’s should I attend.

Most students have parents, grandparents, or other role models to help them make the decision on which university they should attend. Others aren’t as fortunate to have such great people in their lives so that’s why each university has a recruiting specialist.

The recruiting specialist job is to recruit students to the university that they are employed with.

This process of recruitment takes time and goes by many different steps.

The first step would be to Identify prospective student.

This process can be done through going to different high schools and visiting with the students. Also by attending college fairs and having campus visits.

The recruitment specialist will make many phone inquiries, e-mail inquiries, and things along that line.

Recruitment specialist will also have large events on campus such as an open house, meet and greet events, and group tours.

This allows the students to get to know the university better and also interact with other students at the university.

At these events the university and recruitment specialist will offer prizes, give away goody bags, and have different events going on such as a live band or games to play.

Some recruiters such as global recruiters have more duties and get the opportunity to travel around the world. Global recruiters are trying to get more international students in their university to create more diversity for the university.

“It is important that growing universities internationalize their student population in order to maintain a strong position in our globalized world and I aid in that effort,” International Global Recruitment Specialist Jennifer Felps said.

The global recruitment specialists at Texas A&M Texarkana are part of the Study Texas consortium. Which allows them to travel to different countries across the world in order to recruit students.

The next step for a recruitment specialist is to identify what the prospective student is wanting in a college. Such as a degree program, class size, career opportunities, etc.

By figuring this out the recruitment specialist knows what they need to focus on and what they need to focus on less in order to get that student enrolled in their university.

For example if a student is having pricing concerns and that is that students main concern then the recruitment specialist would mainly focus on trying to help that student get grants, scholarships, and loans.

Next the recruiter will inform the student on how their university can help them achieve their goals while gaining the full college experience.

For example there are two college programs in the city of Texarkana, one being Texas A&M Texarkana and the other being Texarkana College.

With Texarkana College being only a two year University a recruiter from Texas A&M may tell the student that they wouldn’t be able to get a bachelors degree or masters degree at Texarkana College and also wouldn’t be able to grasp the full college experience seeing how it is only a two year university.

On the other hand a recruiter at Texarkana College may tell a student that from a financial stand point their college is quite a bit cheaper than Texas A&M Texarkana and that they could always transfer afterwards.

The next process would be for the recruiter to assist the students with the admissions process from start to finish.

By doing so it establishes a relationship between the student and the recruiter. It also makes the student feel as if the recruiter cares about the their well being and isn’t just trying to recruit the student but actually help the student.

Through these steps the recruiter needs to keep in constant contact with the student from beginning to end. This makes the student feel as if he or she matters, which they do matter so they should feel this way if you want that student, enrolled in your university.

Last but most definitely not least a recruiter should make that student feel comfortable with every process from prospective student to admitted student.

When asked what makes her a good recruiter this is what Mrs. Felps had to say, “I would say I am a pro when it comes to letting people know what to expect in college, how to get into college, how to do well in college, and how to look for the job after you graduate college.”

If you follow these steps on what it takes to recruit a student to your university then you should have no problems being a good recruitment specialist.

How to Survive a College Semester

Jamie Williamson

Surviving a college semester takes a certain attitude. Whether you are straight out of high school or returning to college later in life, a college semester is a stressful time in a person’s life. Students either have the I am going to get a 4.0 attitude or a laissez-faire one where let what ever is going to happen, happen. Here are a few tips to help no matter which attitude you have.

First, get a calendar or planner. This will help with keeping due dates straight. No one wants to miss a due date. A calendar/planner helps keep up when a professor makes changes to the course calendar. A calendar/planner also helps eliminate the stress of having to ask when things are due for both the student and professor.

Second, get to know the people in class. Getting to know classmates will help when it is time to study for a test. Classmates make good study groups or new friends. Friends are a very important part of a college semester. Without them a person could go crazy. Classmates can also be a lifesaver if you miss class or need help with an assignment.

Third, get to know your professors. Professors may seem intimidating but they are regular people. Do not be afraid to email a professor about an homework assignment or stop by their office when they have office hours. Professors are the ones who will be able to answer questions about a tough homework assignment.

While these things may not seem like much, they will help relieve stress during a semester. A few basic tools can make or break a college semester. Surviving a semester is easy to do if you have a few tips to help along the way.

Bump. Set. Spike and dig!

This Saturday one of the campus sororities, Omega Delta Chi, will host its third annual Bump For a Cure volleyball tournament.

The tournament will be held at the Bringle Lake Village sand volleyball court at 6:00 p.m. and all proceeds will go to the National Breast Cancer Foundation.

October, as is known widely, is breast cancer awareness month. Breast cancer is still the leading cause of death for women in the United States and is especially prominent in African-American women.

In years past, people from the community gather in hopes of raising funds to bump cancer away. Though they gather with smiles and laughter filling the air, the somber reminder of those lost to the ghastly disease is ever present.

As each volleyball is tossed in the air and bumped from side to side, the meaning of the tournament becomes more clear. Bump away the pain, bump for a cure.

To sign-up for the tournament you may email omegadeltachi2013@gmail.com

Pinktober

Leslie Arietta

“On Wednesdays we wear pink,” Regina George says in the film Mean Girls. Well, I have a new quote for Regina George, “In October, Texas A&M University-Texarkana (TAMUT) wears pink.” October is the month of Breast Cancer Awareness and the students and faculty of TAMUT have come together to contribute to this month.

On Thursday, October 8th the National Sorority Interest Group (NSG) held a bake sale. This bake sale was breast cancer themed and some of the funds went towards breast cancer awareness. NSG had plenty of goodies on their bake sale table and all of them were pink to help raise awareness for breast cancer.

The next morning Friday, October 9th students and faculty of TAMUT gathered together on the lawn of the University Center to participate in Pink Out Friday. Everyone was wearing pink and gathered to make a human pink ribbon to take a photo. The outcome was successful and it was a fun way to get a variety of people to help raise awareness of breast cancer. Later on that evening TAMUT women’s soccer team was hosting a game against Dallas Christian College. For this game the members of the soccer team had a piece of pink on them during the game whether it was electrical tape for their socks or ribbons and headbands for their hair. The Eagles were in full support.

Texas A&M University-Texarkana will continue to support the month of breast cancer awareness. Students, faculty, organizations, and athletes will all be participating in Race for the Cure this Saturday, October 17th at the Four States Fairgrounds. Some will be running or walking in Race for the Cure while others will be helping with setting up and getting ready for Race for the Cure.
