Chick-Fil-AYE

Kelsea Kregel

As a college student, eating in the school cafe can get old quickly. On days where the only food available is mysterious meat and unseasoned vegetables, I treat myself to a meal off campus. More often than not, I find myself at Chick-Fil-A (unless I’m having a typical late night study session and the only chain open is Taco Bell). Not only does Chick-Fil-A satisfy my desire for tasty food, but it is also relatively inexpensive, saving me a text from an angry mother complaining I’m spending too much money.

As college students, most are on a tight budget and try to find a quick fix to aid their hunger. Between juggling classes, work, athletics, and studying, it is difficult to find the time to cook a meal. Not to mention the limited resources if you live on campus. What’s the next best thing to do when you aren’t able to cook yourself a meal? You go buy one. As a college student on a budget, it can be difficult to find quality food for a low price. Chick-Fil-A makes a point to appeal to their customers. Not only is food reasonably priced, but they also have excellent customer service. They go out of their way to ensure the customer has an enjoyable experience and based on personal experience, the employees have always ensured I have everything I need refills, extra sauce, the whole 9 yards. They also make the experience more enjoyable with their friendly, well-known phrase “my pleasure”. There are several options to choose from on the menu (all chicken, of course) and an average meal costs $7. For the quality of food you are paying for, $7 is a steal. A meal includes a chicken entrée, a classic side, and a medium drink.

The company also prides itself in the quality of its products. This appeals to customers because no one wants to pay for low quality food. The chicken itself is 100% breast meat with no fillers or additives and is cooked with 100% refined peanut oil which is a healthier choice to use for their chicken. The chicken is hand breaded in their kitchens and salads are fresh and hand chopped. Lemonade is freshly squeezed and tea is freshly brewed. The company also draws in customers by annually participating in Cow Appreciation Day. Every July, Chick-Fil-A franchises across the nation gives customers a free meal if they come dressed as a cow. This is a costly event and the company loses thousands of dollars on this day alone.

It is no secret the company operates under strong political beliefs. The franchise is closed on Sundays to offer employees a day of worship. This is a tradition that has been around since the franchise was founded in 1967. Chick-Fil-A is one of a few American businesses that is closed on Sundays due to religious beliefs. The CEO of Chick-Fil-A has also vocalized his religious beliefs. Dan Cathy, son of the original founder, made comments that turned the company’s several franchises into a temporary battleground between those supporting the comments made by Cathy and those opposing the comments. Several LGBTQ supporters held “kiss-ins” in front of Chick-Fil-A restaurants across the country to protest the fast food chain. Others supported Cathy by supporting former governor of Arkansas Mike Huckabee’s declaration of August 1st as Chick-Fil-A appreciation day in light of the recent turmoil.

However, Chick-Fil-A has recently supported a LGBTQ film festival recently. This wasn’t a corporate sponsorship, but a franchisee sponsorship, and the film festival “Level Ground” is a faith-based film festival whose mission statement reads “Our mission is to create safe space for dialogue. We create the best and brightest minds to help us think through what’s happening in the world of faith, gender, and sexuality, and more importantly, how to talk about it.” Chick-Fil-A’s Christian values sets them apart from other fast food chains.

Chick-Fil-A is a successful fast food chain and is admirable due to its strong business model. According to the Journal of Law and Politics, the average individual Chick-Fil-A franchisee annually brings in roughly 2.7 million a year while it’s closest competitors McDonald’s and Panera annually brings in 2.4 and 2.2 million. Remember, Chick-Fil-A is closed on Sundays. This is a religious practice, but the reason this proves Chick-Fil-A has an excellent business model is because the company loses 1/7 of all potential sales by closing once a week. Yet, they still manage to bring in millions of dollars and keep up with top competitors.

Chick-Fil-A is one of the most successful fast food chains in the United States and there is no doubt they are a top competitor for many businesses. Their strong business model and their emphasis on customer satisfaction makes them an admirable and successful company. Chick-Fil-A offers customers more than just a meal, they offer customers an enjoyable experience leaving college students very satisfied.

Officers At Sea

Richardson Rutter-Reese

The U.S. Coast Guard is one of the five armed branches in America. The Coast Guard is unique in that it falls under the Department of Homeland Security, while the other four branches fall under the guidance of the Department of Defense. The Coast Guard was the first armed force created by the United States as a nation, then known as the Revenue Cutter Service. The job of the service was to deter smugglers and to ensure that taxes were being paid by sea-going merchants. Over the centuries other agencies and duties have been created and absorbed, including the Life-saving service, the lighthouse service, the ice breaking service, the aids to navigation service, the radio service, the humanitarian service, the intelligence service, the law enforcement service, and the immigrations service. All these services and more have been combined to form the multi-directed mission that the modern U.S. Coast Guard performs today.

From a historical perspective, the Coast Guard has been involved in every American conflict, notably Vietnam, World War II, and the War on Terror. During World War II the Coast Guard performed minesweeping operations, operated watercraft during beach landings, collected intelligence, kept traveling routes clear of ice, and performed anti submarine operations. It was a during a beach rescue operation that Signalman First Class Douglas Munro was killed after volunteering to make multiple trips to get all the Marines off the island, including a Marine who would become General Chesty Puller. He was shot on the way back to the ship after making the last trip. He remains the only Coast Guardsman to receive the Medal of Honor.  During the Vietnam War the Coast Guard patrolled the shoreline ensuring the Vietcong would be cut off from supplies and reinforcements. They would also transport troops.

The Coast Guard is the only military branch authorized to perform law enforcement action. This is becuse it falls under the Department of Homeland Security. A Coast Guard vessel may at any time inspect, board, or question any vessel in U.S. waters or our Allies’ waters. There are no rights to privacy on the water as on land. All petty officers in the Coast Guard are federal law enforcement officers, and able to carry subpoenas, detain suspicious individuals, and make arrests. Due to the dual military and law enforcement nature of members in the Coast Guard, there is confusion on how far the rights of a petty officer go. Technically, as federal law enforcement officers, petty officers can carry weapons across the fifty states.  Some state police disagree with this and will still arrest members carrying weapons. This is still an ongoing issue in the courts.

On the topic of members of the Coast Guard, it has consistently been the smallest service since its creation. At the height of its force, the New York Police Department outnumbered the active duty members of the Coast Guard. It has always been a service that prides itself on doing more with less. It receives the lowest budget out of the five services, it has one of the oldest fleets in the world, and consistently uses older technology from the Navy. Many swathes of water go unguarded due to their not being enough funds to patrol all the areas of the coastline.

Even with these problems, people are not deterred from the Coast Guard. It is the most competitive branch to enlist into. The reenlistment rate is above 90%, the only service to have this claim. The Coast Guard administration had to create programs to phase non-performing members out to create space for other sailors to advance. Through the ages, members of the Coast Guard stay with their service. The Coast Guard is a unique service in America, and although its numbers are small, it provides a large impact for the safety and protection of the American people.

Tennis Is Bae

Deontae Harper

Tennis is a sport that I never thought I would play. From the time I can remember up until the day I stepped foot on the tennis court I would judge people that played tennis. “Tennis is lame…Tennis is not a real sport,” are things that I would usually say to people that played tennis or anytime tennis was brought up in a conversation that involved me. With that being said you are not going to believe what I am going to say next. I love tennis and it is my life now! Sit back and listen to my adventurous relationship I have developed with tennis.

It was Christmas break of my junior year, I went out-of-town to visit family and found myself playing a lot of video games with my cousins. It doesn’t matter what I am doing if it involves something of a competitive sort I am going to fight and try to win. My younger cousin figured since I always spoke so poorly of tennis that it would be a great opportunity to beat me in a Wii sports game of tennis. My first reaction was no I will not play this game. I am not a wuss. That didn’t work, my cousin knew exactly how to get back at me which was to say that I was afraid to lose, which I wasn’t, cause I felt that tennis wasn’t a real sport therefore the challenge was not hard at all. I finally gave in and we began to play the game. Instantly I began to sweat from the excessive cardio workout that was provided from the game. Honestly I started off a little shaky due to be being uncomfortable with the sport, but I managed to get it together because of my competitive instincts. I remember the most important thing that has changed my prospective on the game of tennis until this day, which was “tennis is a lot harder than it looks.” This statement was the start of a relationship I will not be willing to give up on now. Who would have ever thought those words would come out my mouth after that negativity I have thrown at the game. I did in fact beat my cousin in the game which has helped me become who I am today which I will get into later.

Christmas break was over and I was back at home for school. I just started off-season for football and began the season for basketball. Two sports that I can truly say that I am decent in and will compete to my fullest potential every time I get a chance. Such a powerful statement that had no meaning after I did what I am about to tell you. One day after school before my basketball game I went out to the tennis courts to watch a home match. Yes, I knew very shocking to see myself at a tennis match, but the replay of tennis match I played on the Wii was running through my mind and I wanted to see how hard this sport really was in real life. As soon as I got out to the courts I was in awe because it was in deed harder than I imagined. I immediately wanted to try it for myself, so I did what I figured was safe and talked to the coach. His response to my little story  was if you are serious I can turn you into something special quickly with this sport. I went to my game, and all night I thought about what he told me. The very next day at school I decided to take coach Mihok up on his offer and joined the tennis team because I figured that if this is a challenging sport then I must try to figure it out.

Now I will fast forward to the inspirational point of this relationship with tennis. Since I started, I have achieved many things in this sport. My senior year of high school I was first team all-district, district champs, and a regional qualifier. I also played some of the United States Tennis Association tournaments and received the upper level status of Champ level players. Throughout the summer going to my senior I played tennis every day and trained harder than you could imagine. I decided to quit football and basketball for tennis because I enjoyed the game a lot more, and I just had passion for the game at this point in my life. Halfway through my senior year my coach called me with some shocking news. He told me that he spoke with a few of his tennis buddies that coach on the college level and told me that he would be able to get me a spot on a college team if I trained hard every day for it. What did I do from here? you guessed right, I trained every single day regardless of the weather to assure myself that I was going to be ready to compete at the next level.

Which brings us to the current day. Here I am a sophomore in college and on a tennis scholarship to play collegiate tennis. I never would have thought that I would be this far in life with the game of tennis due to be starting so late, but that just goes to show you that if you set goals for yourself and work hard to achieve those goals in every aspect of your life, there are no limits, and you can be anything in this world you want to be, as long as you are feeding yourself positive energy and finding a true relationship with whatever it is you are trying to achieve. Honestly I never would have imagine that I would be in the position I am in today playing college tennis but it all started that day I challenged myself when playing against my cousin. I love tennis it is my life and my passion and I am proud to say that!

Lights, Camera, Action

Sharda James

My ultimate dream career is broadcasting; specifically, I would love to be a daytime television talk show host. It’s crazy to think this is my dream career, because this hasn’t always been my passion. Somehow, I always found myself watching them and pretending to be to a host interviewing my favorite celebrities in my head.

I love everything about celebrity gossip and pop culture. Someone I really admire is Wendy Williams. She originally started in radio, then, eventually it was on to having her own talk show, “The Wendy Williams show.” Wendy Williams also went to college and was a communications major. I love how opinionated she is and never apologizes for how she feels. The best piece of advice I’ve heard her say about trying to figure out your craft, is that starting in radio is good practice. On the radio you’re talking non-stop for approximately four hours as opposed to television where most shows are about an hour. Since radio isn’t visual it really gives you a chance to paint the imagery for whatever story you’re portraying to your audience. It wasn’t always easy for Wendy. Considering she was so opinionated, a lot of people thought she would never be successful in this field of work. One thing I’ve definitely taken away from her is to “Live Your Truth”, meaning to own your flaws and always be yourself, because people gravitate to authenticity. Getting into entertainment isn’t the easiest thing. There are so many obstacles that you have to overcome, and you need to know how to take criticism whether good or bad.

Oprah Winfrey would definitely have to be a huge inspiration. She was actually one of the first hosts I ever started watching. One of the things I really admire about her is the fact that she isn’t afraid to ask the obvious questions and to get personal. She isn’t afraid to be vulnerable. I love how comfortable she is able to make her guests feel. That is probably the reason they feel more than comfortable talking to her. Other than focusing on celebrity gossip, I would also like to interview legendary people and have those extremely personal interviews.

Something that I admire about both of them is the fact that they remained themselves.  Taking risks isn’t always a bad thing. Sometimes the biggest thing that you were afraid of is the very thing that will produce your biggest accomplishment. I’ve learned to not listen to what people have to say about you. If you have a dream go after it. However to accomplish your goals you first need to make a decision, what is it that you want out of life? The second thing is to have a positive mindset. Your thoughts become things spoken into existence. There’s a reason why your parents have told you your whole life that “you can do anything you set your mind to,” because the mind is the most powerful tool we have as humans. The third thing is to believe in yourself, because if you don’t who will? The last but certainly not the least you have to put in the work. You can’t sit around praying or wishing for things to magically happen if you’re not doing anything to deserve it. We have the same 24 hours in a day as some of the biggest celebrities, but it’s your choice of what you decide to do with them. When it’s all said and done, I hope to be able to one-day live in California or New York as a successful daytime talk show host. However, at the end of the day I hope to make a difference in television.

Seeing No-bunny

Allison Hall

Have you ever wanted to be involved with a seemingly insane man and his imaginary bunny? Well has Arkansas High got the show for you! Coming this spring, a carefree and charming, family friendly comedy about a high society man and his 6 foot tall mystical companion named Harvey hits the stage of Texarkana’s own Arkansas High School. More specifically, Harvey (1941), written by Mary Chase, is the second show of the year for Mr. Wyatt Hamilton, Arkansas High’s theater director, and his students. This show is centered around a Mr. Elwood P. Dowd, played by James Hodges and Victor Vargas, and focuses on a central message of wholesome friendship, or, as Mr. Hamilton puts it, “love your friends for who they are and all of their quirks”.

For this 2015-2016 school year, Mr. Hamilton has chosen to run with a fall drama and spring comedy as opposed to Arkansas Highs prior fall play, spring musical due to lack of male interest of the musical form. Even the smallest of theatrical musicals require an abundance of strong, dedicated, and interested patrons. In addition, Hamilton has chosen to employ two full casts for a sum of four shows as opposed to the prior two. He believes that not only will this open up more opportunity for show attendees, but also for performers in being able to have 21 students involved in a 12 role script. The push for this show seems to be individual creativity and involvement, which will promote positivism and encouragement, a good note for the modern age teenager or anyone else for that matter.

Among things that are remaining the same are ticket prices, show times, location, and concession. Tickets with be on sale at the door for five dollars and concessions with be available, namely sodas, chips, and brownies, at varied prices. The play will take place in Arkansas High’s Student Union (a.k.a cafeteria) from April 21-24 with a Thursday, Friday, and Saturday showing at seven o’clock p.m. and one Sunday showing at two o’clock p.m. Harvey is expected to run approximately two hours, including a 10 minute intermission. It is also worth noting that the Arkansas High theater department plans on more fundraising for show support. If you have any questions or ideas for fundraising endeavors, you can contact Wyatt Hamilton at (870) 774-7641 or email him at Wyatt.Hamilton@tasd7.net.

All in all, Harvey will be a great experience for people of all ages and worth a viewing. You can’t beat five dollar entertainment. If nothing else you will get a good laugh, and who doesn’t need that from time to time?

All Work and No Play

Leslie Arietta

Being a 22 year-old college student with one year left to graduate means that I have to spend my time wisely. Many college students in their 20s can relate to the exact lifestyle I live. Some college students have all the free time in the world and others have to plan accordingly to fit things in their schedule. My life is literally all work and no play.

There are many events to attend on campus of Texas A&M University-Texarkana that are happening now and the near future. These events include super lectures, talking events with special guests, activity events, intramural sports, and collegiate sporting events. There is an event occurring on campus at least once a week. If you have time it would be a great opportunity to attend an event because it could be beneficial for your day.

Unfortunately in my situation I do not have a lot of free time to be able to attend campus events and get involved. My focus in life right now is school and work. I am currently taking 18 hours of class and on top of that I work at least 35 hours a week at my job. For some college students, the college life is all fun and games, but for my college experience it is about getting my degree and being able to pay for my education.

Coming from California to Texas I have learned to be independent and take care of myself. I currently pay for my own tuition through scholarship, loans, and out-of-pocket costs. In order for me to pursue my degree I must have a job to support myself by paying my bills and providing necessities.

In the beginning of the semester I was beyond stressed because I had no time for anything unless it was school related or work related. I did not have a fun life while people around me had plenty of leisure time. Now in the middle of the semester I have learned to appreciate the way my time is spent. Sometimes you have to work hard now in life in order to have a successful future and that is my life motto to get me through this semester. It is no longer about my life now, but it is about my life in the future.

If you are a current college student who is going through the same experience my advice to you is to take a deep breath. The college life is about building a lifestyle for yourself that can help you be successful in the future. It is okay to have a lifestyle of all work and no play, but remember to give yourself a little break when possible so you do not have stress. The key to stay motivated is to get organized and have a plan and all this hard work will pay off in the end. Appreciate your success that you are building now.

Video Games: All-Purpose Entertainment

Aaron Caraway

About 16 years of experience playing video games has impressed upon me that there is always an elephant in the room –  video games are often not the preferred entertainment medium among the groups of people I have grown up alongside and interacted with my whole life. To many, gaming is simply a flash game on a school computer or the next big mobile game on smartphones (titles previously the preferred mobile game were Flappy Bird and Angry Birds). However, video games exist to scratch an itch that no other medium – not books, comic books or movies or TV — can ever treat. Video games, through their union of graphics and narrative, and their myriad gameplay styles which impact our perception of genres of mainstream entertainment, are truly the only all-purpose entertainment medium.

Video games have held my interest not necessarily from a historical standpoint but for how that can potentially reach any extreme in an entertainment spectrum between graphics and narrative, two pivotal elements of almost any work of art. Every mainstream work of entertainment exists somewhere along this spectrum: comic books are a marriage of the two, using descriptive artwork alongside dialogue and monologue to convey the characters and scenarios depicted on the page. Books, obviously, lie on the extreme narrative end of this spectrum, conveying every aspect of the work through careful use of words. They aim to not only present the conversations between characters but the actions between characters and their surroundings, giving the reader a mental picture of what is going on in any particular scene without any visual reference. Movies and TV shows can reach a middle ground between graphics and narrative but tend to appeal to the graphics end of the spectrum through film and editing techniques – the intention is often to elevate the narrative beyond what is said or seen onscreen.

Where video games fall on this spectrum depends largely on the developer, but like comic books, each title is a marriage of these two factors. The unique part, however, is that video games are meant to be interacted with by a person, called the ‘player’. Indeed, video games enter a realm untouched by any other medium by virtue of being something the person experiencing it can touch and often times affect. Because of this, neither aspect can dominate the other – the most captivating narratives in video games take place within a world the player can explore and come to understand outside of the exposition and plot points. Likewise, while a game can offer a rich, vibrant world to explore, there is still a narrative – a ‘point’, if you will – to the world around you.

Much as in any other medium, video games are often classified by genre, but unlike any other medium, as these games are meant to be interacted with by a player, the style of gameplay is another classification of the video game medium. Action Adventure, Horror, Comedy, Drama, Mystery – these words alone could describe any piece within a given medium. Just as The Boy is a horror movie, the Resident Evil series (a zombie-apocalypse style tale depicting the outbreak of a virus which heavily mutates the affected population) are all horror games. The Avengers series of movies and the Uncharted series (depicting treasure hunter Nathan Drake on his quests to pursue ancient legends, such as the Lost City of El Dorado) could both be described as Action.

With video games, however, the type of gameplay affects the player’s perception of that genre greatly. A couple of prominent examples of gameplay types are the Fighting Game, the Shooter, and the RPG. Let’s examine these through the lens of the horror genre: A fighting game typically pits two players against each other, or a player against a bot. The Mortal Kombat series (depicting to-the-death struggles between various worlds) could be considered a Horror Fighting Game – the playable characters often look suitably gruesome and scary, using attacks that would be gory in nature like ripping limbs off or incinerating their opponent.

Shooter gameplay can come in two forms – First Person Shooter (FPS) or Third Person Shooter (TPS.) A ‘Horror’ FPS (such as the Left 4 Dead games, which follows a group of 4 characters as they try to survive the zombie apocalypse) would convey to the player, by virtue of the camera being where the characters’ head should be, that they are for all intents and purposes the character. Because of this, particularly scary segments solicit a much stronger response emotionally – when a monster jumps out to attack, they appear to be attacking you – as if they invaded your physical space. A Horror TPS (such as the Resident Evil series), however, would not solicit anywhere near as strong a response. In a TPS, the camera is placed behind your character, usually to either side. That same monster that jumped out to attack you before now appears to be attacking your character, and while the sense of urgency to defeat this creature may remain, you are confident that you are not in danger.

Finally, a RPG – or Role Playing Game – has the potential to offer the most freeform gameplay of all styles. The idea behind these types of games is that at least partially, the character you play is one of your own design – RPGs attempt, in various ways, to make the experience as freeform as possible, allowing you to create your character’s appearance, personality and skill set with your weapons of choice, which may also have been made or customized by you. In a ‘Horror’ RPG such as Bloodborne (an eerily Lovecraftian tale of a nameless persons struggle to cure themselves of a disease plaguing the now-overrun city of Yharnam), and in this same situation where a monster jumps out to attack you, the player would have various methods of dealing with this monster. They may prefer to be up close and personal, carrying the biggest instruments of destruction at their disposal. They may choose to be highly defensive and outlast this monster. They may choose to lure it into a trap, or deal with it from range. Should the opportunity present itself, particularly clever players may find ways to avoid this monster entirely. If the distinction between genres of entertainment due to various gameplay styles is understood from these examples alone, then consider that this is only from one genre and three of the most mainstream gameplay styles used today – taking into account the other genres of entertainment and the myriad of gameplay styles not covered in this piece (and especially taking into account the developers’ takes on these genres, birthing what could be considered a new form of previously understood styles of gameplay), the possibilities are almost endless.

If my decade-and a half interest with video games has taught me anything, it’s that while they are often not the source of entertainment for the public as they are for me, video games afford me the pleasure of visiting worlds and engaging in them in such a way that is impossible in reality. Many may call this ‘escapism’ – this notion that I, and by extension all gamers, choose to play these games and visit these worlds in an effort to leave our own. To those people, I say this: If only it were that simple. If only I simply wished to go to these incredible worlds people dared to create, and leave this one behind. The truth is, however, that I fancy the thought of being a traveler of sorts far more than having travelled – my love for this all-purpose entertainment medium, that which can not be measured simply by graphics and narrative or quantified by their gameplay styles, means that I cannot simply go to some new world and leave well enough alone. I’ve spent 16 years happily exploring works of fiction that we’ll never see happen in reality quite the same way, and that means that I’ve got many stories to tell. For those of you not convinced, enjoy your time on this earth, with people you love and things you like. I’ll be exploring Fallout 4’s Commonwealth, or preparing for my journey into Dark Souls III’s Lothric. If I’ve been able to pique your interest any, feel free to join me.

Love After Valentine’s

Anthony Hamilton

The highly anticipated Love After Valentines concert made its way to the Perot theater on Friday night, February 19th. Thanks to KTOY 104.7 and Soul Man Billy Bland, I was able to attend the show, and I must say it was a very good concert that any lover of R&B and Soul music would have enjoyed.

The performers were Vaughn Willis, Maad Moiselle, 2-time Grammy award winner Timothy Bloom and the Headliner, platinum recording artist, R&B diva KeKe Wyatt.

Up and coming R&B artist Vaughn Willis opened the show, and he proved to be a very talented 1 man band on this occasion. Willis performed a mixture of socially-charged and relationship original songs along with cover songs, namely Let’s Get it On, a Marvin Gaye classic, and Change is Gonna Come, which is a Sam Cooke classic. The highlight of Willis’ performance found him playing his guitar and harmonica at the same time. Willis also has a very strong vocal presence. He is not a household name, but I believe he will be at some point, as he’s a very talented artist with a strong stage presence. To find out more about Vaughn Willis, check out swifmusic.com.

Maad Moiselle followed Willis. She is also multi-talented and what some would consider a jack of all trades. Not only did she perform her own material, but she was the DJ, and she provided the music for KeKe Wyatt. Her performance although short, was very high-energy and entertaining. At one point of her performance, she performed out in the audience. The highlight of her performance was the performance of her funk-tinged new single Sweet & Low, which is available on iTunes.

Next was 2-time Grammy award winner Timothy Bloom. His performance was as soulful as it gets. Not only is he a very accomplished singer but also a guitarist as well as a pianist, and he put all of these talents on display. Bloom appeared to really enjoy himself, as there was a lot of playful interaction with the audience during the course of his show. It was amazing to see and hear him switch from guitar to piano and back to guitar flawlessly for the highlight of his performance which was the performance of his hit song ‘Til the End of Time, which is also available on iTunes.

The last performance of the night came from headliner KeKe Wyatt, and you could tell from the reception she received from the crowd that her performance was highly anticipated. She also seemed to really enjoy the intimate setting that the Perot offers, as she interacted with the crowd while performing her hit songs including Nothing In This World, and her cover of Patti LaBelle’s classic If Only You Knew and the song that put her on the map in the late 90’s, the duet with Avant, a cover of the Renee’ and Angela classic My First Love. The highlight of her performance for me was when she revealed that her father had just passed, and she performed a tribute song titled Tears In Heaven during which she was overcome with emotion. Many celebrities won’t share vulnerability the way she did, and for those who have lost a parent who was indeed their world, it was very touching and emotional to us all. Her new album is available for pre-order as well on iTunes.

All the performers pointed out how happy they were to put on this show for Texarkana, and each expressed a desire to return at some point in the future. If opportunity presents itself to see any of these artists in concert, I suggest taking advantage. It would be well worth an investment of time and money spent to see them perform. If you are a fan of good R&B music, these artists, in my opinion, are bucket list material. I would love to see each of them in concert again.

This was a very enjoyable as well as entertaining night for the lover of good soul music. I’m very happy to have been a part of it.

Basketball, is a creative and brilliant invention by the infamous physical education teacher by the name of James Naismith. The game is simply the greatest sport ever next to football but you know we all have opinions. To me basketball is everything in the world, growing up day by day practicing and working on my craft has all gone to waste. Moving to Texarkana kind of limited my resources to the game of basketball due to not having available gyms and or AAU basketball teams closer. Coming from Houston we had it all. We had coaches coming to the games, where here it was more centered towards football and baseball which I feel is unfair. So my question is why isn’t basketball more promoted here and why don’t we have gyms available to the public or even college students? Not like the basketball courts and gyms we already have, I mean something new with hardwood and or should Texas A&M Texarkana bring on a basketball team to bring more students to the campus.

Having a team here would really bring a lot more attention to the school I feel. Having more people attend the school from different places in the world and having their families support would be crazy.  I honestly think by starting a a team here, there would be better vibes to the school. Don’t get me wrong, its great right now, but no excitement. Basketball brings excitement and electricity to the crowd whether it’s the home team or away team they’re both going to give their all. Somebody is going to put on a show. With having basketball games the school would generate more money in the school funds having a nice gym would be a small investment leading to something great. There would be local kids moving to the school, trying out for the team but main focus is going to be school. Hmm, give some thought it seems to belike a great idea.

Even with the rec I believe that everyone loves to play basketball and we should bring one to the rec and see how many people end up playing basketball in a daily. School of course is the main focus, but having a family and unity amongst a basketball team is like no other. It would bring some swagger to the school. Not only bringing swagger, but it would make the school more diverse amongst their peers causing even more people to come. Generating more funds for the school once again with a small investment and all the land we have I believe the idea would be gold. It would also open up the field to possibly bring more majors to the school if it had growth in population.

If a team formed here I would definitely tryout for the team because all I know is basketball and that’s what I love. My major is mass communications because I want to make it to the NBA Not only using my skills but by having a brain and knowing the knowledge of the game off the court hopefully becoming an assistant or sports analyst. I will always pursue my dreams one way or another because basketball has been really good to me and I owe it that much. Now what we have right now is a very nice state of the art, and yes I love it, but man basketball brings character in so many ways. The excitement will keep more kids in schools and less kids out of these Texarkana streets due to the high crime rate that we do have due to the population of Texarkana.

Growing up, I didn’t try hard enough when I moved to Texarkana. It was like I lost my love. Like my heart was taken. Being used to having multiple access to many different basketball gyms at any time of the night was unbelievable. I truly miss the golden days. Basketball also brings more expansion maybe causing growth making A&M Texarkana Similar in size to A&M Commerce in a couple of years. This should be brought to the dean’s attention that having a team here would bring more funds and excitement to even his life because the whole school would be a little different. Just throwing my two cents in there on how it would be great.

Majority of the students at the school would workout more If a new rec was brought to display. A basketball court weight area and eventually a basketball team man that would be absolutely great. Sooner or later it will happen and the school will gain a huge benefit and a new cultural spirit around the school.  Hopefully bringing this to the attention of my professor and my fellow classmates will help spread the word around about having a state of the art gym in the school. So with all the knowledge we have on basketball don’t you think it would be a huge success. Shouldn’t the love of something be brought to life. Basketball is not just a sport it is a dream to many many people all around the world.

With basketball being so important around the world and in so many peoples, lives we should give the town of Texarkana just a little bit of excitement so that they can stay on their feet. Always anticipating some type of basketball game being able to see their children and or friends of the family and other team play would be nice. Having the community come out to support can only mean one thing good reputation having even adults enrolling in school because they’re seeing a change in the community, and its only going to go up from there. Giving that some time and thought we need to expand our mind and funds to help out with this cause. Hopefully we can bring aboard a basketball team and or even other sport teams as the school grows.

Quelf

Leira Moore

Have you ever played Quelf? If not, then Quelf is an “Obey the card” type of game. Quelf starts out like the usual board games where you choose what color board piece you want, and everyone begins at the start. Everyone then takes turns to roll a die, and the one with the highest number gets to go first. The board has a series of spaces that spiral into the center to reach the finish line.

All the spaces alternate between the colors red, yellow, green, blue, and purple. Each color card has its own set of comedy and rules. Red is the “Scatterbrain” card meaning the card holder starts a conversation and he or she must go around the table making sure everyone contributes to the topic. The topic keeps going around the table until a person repeats an answer, says the wrong answer, or takes too long to answer. If the person cannot contribute then they can get penalized 1-3 spaces depending on what the card says. When this card is in play, it doesn’t take long until the players begin to run out of answers. An example of a red topic is “Stuff that stains”; possible answers are wine, BBQ sauce, mustard, grease and so on. After one person has paid the penalty and the red card played then the die moves to the next player and they roll it and so on.
The yellow cards are the “Stuntz” cards. These are more action based and will need you to act out an action, whether it’s a thumb war or to lick your own elbow. One card even requires you to suck your thumb in silence and start rolling the die. When you roll a “3” shout, “Get off my land!” in your best chipmunk voice. The penalty for that particular card is three spaces.

The green cards are the “Quizzle” cards. These cards are not played, instead testing your thinking capacity. The questions tend to be in A B C D format. If you get it wrong, you pay the penalty. If, you get the bonus question correct on these cards then you get the opportunity to move one space forward. One of the funnier questions is: which of the following plays was not written by William Shakespeare? A) The Tempest B) Othello C) Taming of the Shrew D) Romeo and Quelfiette E) All’s well that ends well. If they got this particular question wrong, it’s a two space penalty. However, they have a bonus question worth one space. The bonus question says “Oh that’s too easy you say? Well, then tell us which of the remaining four plays is not a comedy. The Answer is B) Othello is not a comedy.” The green cards are more like brain teasers, but sometimes the answer choices are comical. Let’s say they land on a blue space.

Blue spaces are pure evil at times because the consequences don’t stop adding up. The blue cards are the “Roolz” cards, and they are divided into three sets. Global Roolz affect all players-some examples of the global rule is every time a person laughs they must snort like a pig. So, when one person snorts someone else is going to laugh and snort leading to a fit of laughter from everyone. Another example is no one is allowed to talk unless it is their turn and if they talk they move back two spaces. Next is the Talking rule which affects only the player that drew it. An example is when the player makes eye contact with another they must say “I have you now!”, Another funny one is if someone else starts laughing the player must say “I command you to be quiet!” The last set of Roolz is the action rule, which could require a person to sit on their hands for the rest of the game or could make someone be it. When that card is in play anyone who touches this person takes the penalty and then becomes it until another action rule comes into play. These three simple rules are hard to follow and end your turn.

The purple cards are the “Showbiz” cards, and they are very similar to the yellow cards. The purple card could require a person to do the chicken dance or sing Kumbaya. One of the many comical cards in this series is the one where you are a news anchor. Without laughing report in your most serious voice the shocking news of your mother’s underwear catching fire in the dryer. If you laugh, you go back two spaces.

I wasn’t too excited to play this game at first because I was not about making a fool of myself but it has quickly become one of my favorite board games. I have friends and family members that are not afraid to make fools of themselves, and when everyone laugh and becomes embarrassed, it makes it easier to act a little silly. With most board games the more people who play, the better the game is. I will say that I have played this game several times, and I don’t think we’ve made it through all the cards yet. This game is fascinating because it has a way of pulling people out of his or her shell, while allowing others to really get to know them and even laugh at good naturally. I recommend everyone to try this game. It is family friendly and is great for those stay in, low-budget, nights. So, one night grab the game, a couple of friends, and have fun. You can buy this hilarious game at Wal-Mart for 20$. This game is full of crazy stunts and questions that will have all ages laughing until tears are in everyone’s eyes.
