New Soccer Season at TAMUT

Are you looking for things to do while you procrastinate on that homework you have? If you have school spirit and enjoy sports, then the new soccer season is perfect for you.

The Texas A&M University – Texarkana soccer program has brought in new players and lost many key players. Since the program started in 2014 for the women’s team and 2016 for the men’s, both teams have had one goal, to compete in the conference tournament. Our first home game was on September 8th against Southwestern Christian University, and the most recent was at Eagle Field against Huston-Tilliston University this week on October 4th. This Saturday October 6th, come see a double-header against Our Lady of the Lake University on Senior Day at 1 p.m. and 3:30 p.m.

With last year’s women’s soccer season coming to an end in a heartbreaking fashion, losing one to zero to rivals St. Thomas in the conference final, the women have a lot of new faces after graduating eleven players. They hope to start where they left off last season and get back into the conference tournament. They have seen the value of the graduating class after losing against Wayland Baptist and Bethel University. The team lost lots of key players, such as Lily Cardozo and Neeley Keller in the midfield. On the defensive line, the team lost Hanna Williams, Hazel Espinoza, and Ashley Bainton. On the offensive side, the team took its biggest blow, losing leading scorer Sam Sharpnack-Isom.

The women’s team has bought in new players from California such as Lesly Macias, Taylor Hale, Jacky Padilla, Sabrina Murillo, and Brittany Small. The rest of the transfers and freshmen are from Texas. These players were recruited by Coaches Don Koontz and Fallon Keller, with some help from the graduating class.  The new incoming players are seen as some of the best recruits as incoming freshman and junior transfers. Although the team has already began competing against other teams and have faced defeat, they plan on progressing throughout their season.

On the men’s side, after last season, the men lost four from their graduating class and lost many players from the Class of 2021. Last season the class of 2021 bought in twenty new players and lost more than half of those players, but for the 2017-2018 season Coach Don Koontz bought in twenty-four new players, including freshman and junior transfers. The new incoming players came from all over Texas such as Frisco, Plano, Rockwall, Austin, Houston and Dallas. With the incoming players, Koontz raised his expectations and says so far that the men have met or surpassed them.

As the men head towards the later half of their season, they hope to pick up where they left off last year and go further to hopefully advance and make it to the conference tournament for the first time in men’s soccer history. The men hope to pick up a few early wins at home, before they start traveling more, later in the season.

TAMUT Baseball Program Continues to Make History

Andy Verke Jr.

The Texas A&M University-Texarkana baseball team is in its inaugural season and have already set the bar high for years to come. In its first year they have gained national recognition from social media with Kenneth Fudge’s walk off grand slam epic bat flip and against Georgia Gwinnett for having fireworks going off in the middle of game two. In addition to the fame from social media, on March 15, 2016, The 2016 NAIA Baseball Coaches’ Top 25 Poll was released and the TAMUT Eagles Baseball team receiving four votes in the top 25. Now that may not sound like a big deal but for a first year program it shows what they have accomplished.

To put the cherry on top of the season, the TAMUT Baseball Team qualified for the A.I.I. (Association of Independent Institutions) Conference tournament as the #3 seed. Their first game will be on Saturday, May 7th at noon as they take on Edward Waters College (the #6 seed) out of Jacksonville, Florida.

All conference tournament games will be streamed on Grizzly Digital Network. Prices for streaming are $7.95 for a single game or $29.95 for the all tournament pass which includes every game.

There are eight teams in the double elimination tournament and the first, second, and third place teams will receive automatic qualifying bids to the NAIA Baseball Regional Tournament.

Congratulations to the TAMUT Baseball program and continue to make history.

Life of a College Baseball Player

Andy Verke Jr.

5am alarm goes off, you want to hit snooze but you know you can’t because you still need to grab a snack before morning weights at 6. 5:45 am you’re in the gym stretching with the position guys because Coach Jones always says “if you’re not 15 minutes early, you’re late!”. It’s about 7:15 am and while people are starting to wake from their nights sleep you are in the empty cafeteria getting breakfast, showering, and getting ready for day of classes.

From 9-1pm you’re busy with classes and only 15 minutes in between each class to grab a small bite to eat. Class is done for the day but you still have to go back to your dorm room, change then head to the field for early hitting at 1:30.

For the next 3-4 hours you are dialed in on baseball and paying attention to the details. During those 3-4 hours you will have a bunt scrimmage, situational hitting scrimmage, batting practice, and conditioning. Star drills… The consequence of not paying attention to detail. So what is a star drill? It is when you start at home plate and run to the center field wall, back to home plate, down the right field line to the foul pole, across the outfield to the left field foul pole, and finally back to home in two minutes and 20 seconds or less.

It’s approximately 5:30pm and you are finally done with practice and have to head back to the dorms to get dinner, shower, and gather your things to go to the library. After your dinner you head to the library to study for test, do your homework, and complete any projects you have. It’s 11pm and the library is closing but you still have to finish some of your homework, so you go to the study room in the dorms and complete your homework for the night.

By the time you get done with your homework it’s 12:30 and you have to be up in four and a half hours to do it all again.

It takes a lot of discipline and sacrifice, but I wouldn’t change a thing.

The Life of the Tennis Forehand

Deontae Harper

Everyday day I ask myself why tennis is underrated and I never could get the best conclusion. Tennis is not an easy sport to play, especially when you are playing the right way. I would like for just anybody to come out and play tennis and master the sport like Rafael Nadal and Rodger Federer does. Now these guys can hit amazing shot none stop as if it was the easiest thing on earth. The way they make a forehand shot look so fantastic is phenomenal. The reason the tennis forehand shot is astonishing is because, it allows the player to maintain control over the game and their opponent, it is the most comfortable shot in tennis for most players to use when rallying during a match, and it blows your opponents’ minds with the different types of spin that you can apply to the ball.

For starters my favorite forehand shot is the running forehand shot because it allows me to apply tons more power to the ball then I would from a stable open stance forehand shot. For instance Russian tennis player Vera Zvonareva, who now holds the highest percentage of this shot in the women’s professional stats leads with only 47% out of 100, this shows the difficulty of the shot. Although I like this shot, this shot isn’t an easy shot to accomplish because, you have to keep your body balanced throughout the shot because if not you most likely will shank the ball out the court. One author explains that Vera says, “I like to use what I call a buggy whip swing with lots of upward and forward movement,” (Rolley 39).

There is a big component to the forehand shot that has a tendency to get overlooked. This component is the mental focus to hit the ball accurately, maintain control over the game and your opponent. I have the skill to do this when I choose to sometimes , but sometimes I just let my opponent get into my head and blow the match out of anger. Many people who have this skill wins outweigh the ones who have short tempers according to the stats of sports psychologist Sian Beilock: “A player who has this skill ask themselves after every point where am I going to play the next ball to either maintain or take control of the game.

Next is the comfortability of the forehand shot. Most players like to relax as much as possible when hitting this shot so that they would not mess up the shot due to tension in the body. No player like to hit a forehand that they will regret in a match because that’s usually where a player shines on the court while performing this shot. Whenever I drop a forehand into the net due to and correctable error that I mad I flat-out yell at myself for giving that point away. In comparison to my forehand shot a professional tennis players is exceptionally off the charts better than mine. Look at men’s professional tennis player Gael Monfils’ forehand, he has way more control and power than me. Gael stats that there is five basic components to the forehand shot that he uses, which are the Shoulders, Arms, Follow-through, Knees, and Feet. All these components to Gael Monfils’ forehand allows him to maximize the ultimate comfort ability that he needs to stay ahead of himself and the game. “ There’s the modern typical forehand, and there is Gael Monfils’ forehand,” says Tracy Austin.

Last but not least we have the spin to apply to the ball when striking a forehand shot. There are several different types of spin that you can apply to the ball. The common spin that most tennis players use is the basic topspin shot. A topspin shot means that you basically close the face of your racket and brush up on the backside of the ball to create that simple spin. “ I love to hit a deep topspin shot that hits the ground and takes off due to the spin which causes my opponents to struggle with their returns to this shot,” says outstanding tennis player Rafael Nadal ( Burwash 22 ). Another great spin to develop is this slice shot which simply means to cut through the ball, but at the same time push outward with the ball evenly. This also is a hard shot to hit because your timing has to be right and at the same time you must have the control to do it , but when you develop this shot you will become a much greater tennis player on both sides of the ball because this slice shot makes the ball leave the path of the opponents which plays in your favor most of the time.

In conclusion to my research over the diversity of the tennis forehand and how it enhances the positive outcome of the game, I would like to close with saying that with out the tennis forehand I think that the intensity in tennis would be taken out because only thing that’s left is the backhand and the serve. Although the backhand and the serve are big components in tennis, the forehand excels pass them because its more popular. The reason the tennis forehand shot is astonishing is because, it allows the player to maintain control over the game and their opponent, it is the most comfortable shot in tennis for most players to use when rallying during a match, and it blows your opponents mind with the several different types of spin that you can apply to the ball.

Tennis Is Bae

Deontae Harper

Tennis is a sport that I never thought I would play. From the time I can remember up until the day I stepped foot on the tennis court I would judge people that played tennis. “Tennis is lame…Tennis is not a real sport,” are things that I would usually say to people that played tennis or anytime tennis was brought up in a conversation that involved me. With that being said you are not going to believe what I am going to say next. I love tennis and it is my life now! Sit back and listen to my adventurous relationship I have developed with tennis.

It was Christmas break of my junior year, I went out-of-town to visit family and found myself playing a lot of video games with my cousins. It doesn’t matter what I am doing if it involves something of a competitive sort I am going to fight and try to win. My younger cousin figured since I always spoke so poorly of tennis that it would be a great opportunity to beat me in a Wii sports game of tennis. My first reaction was no I will not play this game. I am not a wuss. That didn’t work, my cousin knew exactly how to get back at me which was to say that I was afraid to lose, which I wasn’t, cause I felt that tennis wasn’t a real sport therefore the challenge was not hard at all. I finally gave in and we began to play the game. Instantly I began to sweat from the excessive cardio workout that was provided from the game. Honestly I started off a little shaky due to be being uncomfortable with the sport, but I managed to get it together because of my competitive instincts. I remember the most important thing that has changed my prospective on the game of tennis until this day, which was “tennis is a lot harder than it looks.” This statement was the start of a relationship I will not be willing to give up on now. Who would have ever thought those words would come out my mouth after that negativity I have thrown at the game. I did in fact beat my cousin in the game which has helped me become who I am today which I will get into later.

Christmas break was over and I was back at home for school. I just started off-season for football and began the season for basketball. Two sports that I can truly say that I am decent in and will compete to my fullest potential every time I get a chance. Such a powerful statement that had no meaning after I did what I am about to tell you. One day after school before my basketball game I went out to the tennis courts to watch a home match. Yes, I knew very shocking to see myself at a tennis match, but the replay of tennis match I played on the Wii was running through my mind and I wanted to see how hard this sport really was in real life. As soon as I got out to the courts I was in awe because it was in deed harder than I imagined. I immediately wanted to try it for myself, so I did what I figured was safe and talked to the coach. His response to my little story  was if you are serious I can turn you into something special quickly with this sport. I went to my game, and all night I thought about what he told me. The very next day at school I decided to take coach Mihok up on his offer and joined the tennis team because I figured that if this is a challenging sport then I must try to figure it out.

Now I will fast forward to the inspirational point of this relationship with tennis. Since I started, I have achieved many things in this sport. My senior year of high school I was first team all-district, district champs, and a regional qualifier. I also played some of the United States Tennis Association tournaments and received the upper level status of Champ level players. Throughout the summer going to my senior I played tennis every day and trained harder than you could imagine. I decided to quit football and basketball for tennis because I enjoyed the game a lot more, and I just had passion for the game at this point in my life. Halfway through my senior year my coach called me with some shocking news. He told me that he spoke with a few of his tennis buddies that coach on the college level and told me that he would be able to get me a spot on a college team if I trained hard every day for it. What did I do from here? you guessed right, I trained every single day regardless of the weather to assure myself that I was going to be ready to compete at the next level.

Which brings us to the current day. Here I am a sophomore in college and on a tennis scholarship to play collegiate tennis. I never would have thought that I would be this far in life with the game of tennis due to be starting so late, but that just goes to show you that if you set goals for yourself and work hard to achieve those goals in every aspect of your life, there are no limits, and you can be anything in this world you want to be, as long as you are feeding yourself positive energy and finding a true relationship with whatever it is you are trying to achieve. Honestly I never would have imagine that I would be in the position I am in today playing college tennis but it all started that day I challenged myself when playing against my cousin. I love tennis it is my life and my passion and I am proud to say that!

Eagles Nearly Edge Top Seed Team

Andy Verke Jr.

“Ashford is being pushed to the edge by this unknown team from Texas…The Eagles have come to Lawrenceville and impressed everyone!” In its first post-season eligible year, Texas A&M University-Texarkana woman’s soccer team advanced all the way to the semi-final round in the A.I.I. Conference tournament. The Eagles season came to an end after a hard-fought match against the #1 seed Ashford University (3-2).

Ashford University took total control of the game by scoring 2 goals within the first 18 minutes but the Eagles kept on fighting back and Michelle Lee (FR) found the back of the net minutes later. Lee’s goal would make the game 2-1 going into halftime.

In the 56th minute, Michelle Lee would provide Samantha Sharpnack-Isom (SO) a great through ball and Sharpnack-Isom took care of the rest by drilling it into the back of the net tying the game up. Unfortunately for the Eagles, Ashford University caught a break in the 82nd minute and took the lead 3-2.

The goal in the 82nd minute seemed to be just enough to hold off the relentless pursuit from the Eagles. The Eagles finished the season 10-6-1.

The Eagles made the 1st post-season appearance in school history and recorded their first post-season win.

“This season has definitely been one for the books. We created something special last year and continued to make history for our university this year. Making it to the semi-finals of the A.I.I. Conference tournament was something we definitely earned. We came to Lawrenceville and made a statement as a team. It may be the end for the seniors, but it is not the end for this amazing team. I am sad my soccer career is over, but I would not change a thing about what we accomplished as a team within the last couple of years. This program is going to continue making history and I am proud to say I was an Eagle. Dalé Eagle!!” Leslie Arietta (SR).

Congratulations to the TAMUT Eagles Woman’s Soccer team on a great season!

Dalé Eagles!!

Andy Verke Jr.

The Texas A&M University-Texarkana women’s soccer team took the field against #4 seed Fisher College (Boston, MA) yesterday in its first ever post-season match. The Eagles were in complete control from start to finish, scoring a total of 7 goals in the match.

Fallon Keller (JR/Bakersfield, CA) opened up the scoring fest in the 10th minute (1-0). Keller’s goal was the 1st post-season goal in TAMUT soccer history. At the 24:55 minute mark, Arika Elliot (SO/Washington, MO) also took part in the scoring fest by drilling a long distance shot into the back of the net (2-0). A little less than a minute later Fisher College finds the back of the net making the score 2-1. Since the goal by Fisher College, the Eagles did not look back. The Eagles Emilee Bybee (FR/Keller, TX) would put in a goal of her own off an assist from Fallon Keller and Samantha Sharpnack-Isom (3-0). Bybee’s goal would be the last of the first half.

At the half, TAMUT led Fisher College 3-1.

The second half wasn’t any different from the first half. At the 55:57 minute mark, Leslie Arietta (SR/Fresno, CA) provided a great ball for Jena Arreola (SR/San Jacinto, CA) who found the back of the net (4-1). Michelle Lee (FR/Frisco, TX) also found the back of the net in the 61st minute (5-1). Sharpnack-Isom put one past the goalkeeper after receiving a great cross by Alyssa Ybarra (FR/San Antonio, TX) in the 69th minute (6-1). Erin Almengor (FR/Bakersfield, CA) finished the scoring fest in the 83rd minute. Almengor’s goal was her first ever goal as an Eagle.

Arika Elliot was pleased with how the team stating, “It was a great start to our first post-season appearance in the school history and I think we made a statement. It was a total team effort with 7 different goal scorers”.

TAMUT Eagles will face the top rank Ashford today at 3 p.m. central time. The winner of today’s game advances to the A.I.I. Soccer Championship game. You can watch the live stream of the game at the Georgia Gwinnett Athletics page for single game or a tournament pass at a cost or you can follow the game for a live play-by-play feed.

Eagles Soccer Team Breaking School Records

Andy Verke

From the opening whistle, the Texas A&M University-Texarkana Eagles soccer team applied the pressure against Dallas Christian College, scoring four goals in the first 12 minutes. The Eagles scoring fest would not stop there. They went on to score 5 more goals in the first half and 2 more in the second half, making the final score 11-0.

Emilee Bybee (FR) opened the floodgates in the 8th minute by finding the back of the net off a cross by Samantha Sharpnack-Isom (SO). Bybee would do the same one minute later for her second goal of the game. Sharpnack-Isom also scored in the 10th minute off a cross by Bybee. Michelle Lee (FR) joined in on the scoring spree in the 12th minute.

TAMUT Eagles Soccer Fall Short Against Bethel U

Andy Verke

There is no greater way to thank the faculty staff at Texas A&M University-Texarkana than to give them a few hours off work to watch their soccer team host Bethel University (BU) on Faculty Appreciation Day.

The Eagles took control of the ball during the first half, setting the tempo of the game. Although controlling the ball for most of the first half, BU got on the board first in the 12th minute. BU scored from 40 feet out, just out of the reach of GK (Junior) #1 Gabriella Flores. Bethel University GK Danielle Krzyzaniak recorded a shut out in the first half.

During the second half, the Eagles controlled the tempo of the game, but in the 67th minute BU found the back of the net again, giving them a 2-0 lead.

Again, GK Krzyzaniak shut out the Eagles in the second half and the TAMUT Eagles would fall just short to BU, bringing their record to 4-5.

Come cheer on your Eagles soccer team at their next match on Saturday, October 3 at 4 p.m. against Louisiana College for their Homecoming game.
