The Patterson Center and Starbucks

You do not need to go far to enjoy a delicious seasonal Fall drink and a pizza or a sub sandwich. The Patterson Center at TAMUT inside has a Starbucks and a place to get food called Ace’s Place. With finals approaching, a cup of joe and some food makes for the perfect brain fuel needed to finish the semester. Starbucks on campus offers the Pumpkin Spice Latte and Maple Pecan, which can be customized as a hot or cold beverage and with dairy or non-dairy milk options. While Ace’s Place offers pizzas and sandwiches. Barista and senior student who works in Starbucks and Ace’s Place, Malik Tucker says, “Students’ favorites are the Cajun turkey and classic Italian sub sandwiches.”

Now that students have been back on campus, Tucker says, “I feel bad for students who can’t get their usual drinks due to supply shortages.” The Starbucks on campus mainly offers the regular drink menu items and Fall specialty drinks. The difference between the Starbucks on campus and the ones off-campus are the cake pops, winter holiday drinks, and merchandise not available at this location. But if a student prefers a winter holiday drink, the closest would be a peppermint-flavored coffee.

But you can go to any off-campus Starbucks locations, which recently released its new holiday drink and brought back some old favorites. Although some may have supply shortages on some menu items and merchandise, the new variety of holiday cups, mugs, and tumblers are out now. Sweet treats and winter holiday drinks are great for this season. Starbucks this year has introduced their newest holiday drink, which is a combination of a sweet treat flavor called, Iced Sugar Cookie Almond Milk Latte. Starbucks has also brought back their holiday favorites and classics such as the Peppermint Mocha, Chestnut Praline Latte, Toasted White Chocolate Mocha Frappuccino, Caramel Brulée, and Irish Cream Cold Brew. Which all can be customized to your liking. Some options are iced, blended, or hot, with a variety of milk options and non-dairy. But you can always ask a barista what all the drink consists of when creating it to your preference.

The Patterson Center at TAMUT makes it a more convenient way to grab food and drink. But if you are looking for the newer holiday drinks, a 5-minute drive to the closest off-campus Starbucks would be your best bet. Either way, you can enjoy a nice cup of cheer either on campus or off to get through the rest of the semester.

Netflix New “You” Season 3 Review

Now that fall has officially begun, and the weather has been a bit cooler. Some great ways to enjoy this weather are to sit back, drink a hot beverage while watching television.

If you have Netflix, you probably have either watched or come across the Netflix original show called “You”. Recently Netflix released its new season 3 after a long wait. The psychological thriller’s new season has some of the same topics such as crime, murder, drama, romance, and mystery as its previous seasons. But it has dived more into the whole marriage and family phenomena and more murder. Just a spoiler alert if you have never watched this show before, you should watch it from the beginning with the first season to understand the third season.

This new season with the characters Joe Goldberg (Penn Badgley) and Love Quinn (Victoria Pedretti) who I would say the Quinn-Goldbergs since they married in the previous season have so many issues within their marriage. The first episode of Season 3 begins with their new life in a different city. As per the finale of Season 2 where they moved away from LA to a fictional suburb city called Madre Linda in California to have a fresh start. Which to Joe that is not unusual for him to move from place to place when he wants a new beginning. They introduce their baby Henry in the new season. This season shows a bit more of Joe’s dark childhood and less about Love’s childhood life. As we have seen in season 2, we have gotten a glimpse into Quinn-Goldberg’s past and the reason why they let their emotions get the best of them. Their toxic relationship is such a roller-coaster ride in this season 3 but nothing out of the ordinary as their life has been quite similar and their norm.

In this new season Joe is still being himself, a creepy stalker, and not able to contain his urges of following around new love interests and people in general. While Love is still the impulsive partner in crime who does things without thinking about the consequences. While both are learning the family and marriage transition, Season 3 has been shocking and at the same time a bit predictable. This season has been more about the lengths Joe does to protect his son. While Love just seeks love from their relationship and what she does to strengthen their marriage. Season 3 has some repetitive actions like from previous seasons but does bring a different outlook on the marriage and family topics.

Netflix has announced that the show will be renewing so for all the “You” fans this has brought more excitement. Season 4 of the “You” trailer is on YouTube and there are speculations about what the coming season will bring. Although the season had a bit of an unexpected finale. I hope season 4 brings back some of the characters from previous seasons who were not shown or talked about much in season 3. Many people have been sharing their insights and theories on TikTok as to what the ending of season 3 meant and about what they think season 4 will look like. But guess we will have to wait for what happens next.

TAMUT Welcomes New Associate Provost

TAMUT welcomes new Associate Provost Dr. Sushil Sharma. He has many great things planned and in-store for the university. Dr. Sharma plans to set up and consolidate the fields of graduate studies to where all the graduate programs of TAMUT will be consolidated into one umbrella. Along with involvement in the international programs for study abroad and exchange student recruiting. Also work with the office of research grants and sponsor projects which faculty members have been seeking from various agencies. To provide support and bring them all under one umbrella for fostering grants, research, project sponsorship and provide the support needed. “So, throughout the time I will be involved in working on these projects,” he said. In his previous experience, Dr. Sharma was extensively involved in leading the study abroad programs and setting up various partnerships and collaborations with foreign institutions to bring international students to Ball State University. There are various types of programs he has been involved in and he says, “I will be using that experience for setting up similar programs here.”

Dr. Sharma, originally from India, has been in academia for over 35 years. He has worked in different institutions in various countries such as New Zealand, Turkey, and more before settling in the United States. He has helped many universities with their growth and brought in more and better opportunities for students and the campuses in general. His most previous location was at Ball State University in the state of Indiana, where he served many roles in the university for 21 years. Prior to his career at BSU, he was a professor in Canada and worked at an Indian Institute where he worked in management. He has a long experience with different countries, cultures, people, and students with learning different educational systems. “I am very lucky to have this kind of experience,” says Dr. Sharma.

From being in many different places all over the world coming to Texarkana has been a different transition for him. Coming from the most recent state of Indiana, he says up north is much cooler during the winter and at some point, in time of his career, he always wanted to move South. He says, “This is a unique opportunity, which I liked. BSU serves about 22,000 students and when this opportunity opened, I saw that this institution is much smaller and my accommodated experience and expertise in many places fit very well for the growth of the institution. So, I saw this as an opportunity that I can exercise my experience and skillset that I’ve gained.” Dr. Sharma has seen undergraduate students get involved in research working along with a faculty member. “I will be working on how we can enhance student involvement for research for both undergraduate and graduate students working with the faculty members. It’s a great experience for faculty and students to work together so in any way I can be of any assistance in help for the faculty member to engage their students, I will be looking forward to providing support for that,” he said.

So far, his transition to Texas has been pretty good. “I think the big welcoming change has been the weather and also this institution…so I see there are a lot of opportunities. It has been two weeks here and I am learning a lot…I am going through the various training modules which are helping me to know the institution and the system,” he said.  Dr. Sharma has been learning a lot and he says it is important for him to understand the culture and the processes and procedures involved, not only here in Texarkana but in the TAMUT system itself. So, it will be a busy time in the next few months to understand that and then be able to contribute. “I will be striving to establish those procedures processes for the growth and advancement of the institution,” he said.

He plans to work on many of these new projects for the future of TAMUT. “I am looking forward to this experience so someday I could say that I was responsible for building some processes, procedures, systems, programs, in a smaller institution and this is a great opportunity for me to do that. I’m excited about this opportunity and so far, this has been a great experience,” he said.

Dr. Sharma advises those who are just starting college or are transfer students is, “The college experience is not just in the classroom, all students should enjoy the college experience and get involved outside the classroom activities such as extra curriculars, student clubs/organizations. The more students interact with other students through these they will develop their personalities and profiles much better so students should not just limit themselves coming from dorms or home to the classroom but should mingle and network with other students and faculty members and also with the potential employers whenever they are visiting campus. Students should spend all their time doing so because in my experiences many times after your degree those skills are more important than just knowing the book knowledge. Because employers want to see how you approach them, how you communicate and present yourself. Even writing an email, how you write it to a friend or professor, those skills are very valuable and become very important when you look for a career opportunity. So, college is the best platform to develop those skills and can only happen when being involved outside the class.”

Dr. Kim Murray Feature

As the fall semester at TAMUT has begun, you might be thinking about what classes to choose or what may be interesting. Doctor Kimberly Murray is the Associate Professor of Sociology who teaches many different courses in this subject. An alumnus from the University of Arkansas where she earned her Bachelor’s in Sociology and Criminal Justice and her Masters in Sociology, Dr. Murray has been teaching since Graduate School. She then earned her doctorate at the University of Oklahoma.

Originally from the small town of Maud, TX, Dr. Murray has been teaching at TAMUT for 10 years now. She loves her job and enjoys teaching. “The students here have been really enthusiastic and receptive to the topics that I teach so it’s been fun,” she said. Murray has a bubbly personality and in her free time she loves making interior design Pinterest boards and likes to watch television series. Because of her interests in tv, Dr. Murray and former student Leslie Welch helped publish an article for a book, based on the television series Shameless. Which the show inspired them to tie the tv show with sociology topics like marriage and motherhood.

Dr. Murray says any student can benefit from taking a sociology course. Students learn about society, different groups and anything that can be relevant to everybody and overall depends on where the student wants to go career wise. She suggests starting with taking the intro to sociology course offered online, for a glimpse and introduction to sociology.

Murray advises first-year students who are just starting college “to not be afraid to ask for help.” As Murray and her brother were first generation students to attend college, she needed help in navigating college, and she wished to be able to ask more questions and seek help in the areas she needed in. As for sociology majors or anyone interested and thinking about choosing sociology as a major or minor, she says to “Come talk to me if you have any questions about Sociology or where you might be able to get a job”. She says they are a small department but are mighty and it’s a great discipline to have a lot of versatility in the workforce.

Profile Feature: Isabella Ratcliff

As the fall semester has started and students are now able to do more face-to-face classes at Texas A&M University – Texarkana campus, you might have seen around senior student Isabella Ratcliff. She may look like your ordinary college student, but she is someone with a great open book personality. Isabella is a transfer student from the University of Arkansas and is now a senior at Texas A&M University – Texarkana. She is a Psychology major with a minor in Sociology. She has many big dreams and aspirations. Originally from the small town of Atlanta, TX, Ratcliff has lived most of her life here in Texarkana but plans to move to Tyler, TX, and finish graduating with her bachelor’s degree from TAMUT. Her move to Tyler will bring her more opportunities with her career and education since Tyler is a larger city than Texarkana. Ratcliff plans to apply for grad school and attend the University of Texas at Tyler. Her education goals once being accepted at UT Tyler are to study Clinical and Mental Health Counseling and get her License in Professional Counseling. She dreams of one day have her own counseling private practice.

What inspired her to take this route in her studies has been a fascination of hers since being a sixteen-year-old in high school. Ratcliff, being someone who had struggled with her own mental health and would go to counseling while being counseled she would interview her counselors. Doing so brought a glimpse of what counseling is and made her decide on what to do when she would grow up. Her struggles led to her transferring to TAMUT for this specific reason. Since TAMUT has accommodations for students who struggle with ADHD or with other mental health struggles, TAMUT is a much smaller university compared to the University of Arkansas. She feels that since classes are smaller, there is a better chance of building relationships with professors and classmates. This fall Ratcliff is taking 18 semester hours at TAMUT and plans to finish the upcoming spring semester online. Even though she is not a fan of online school because of distractions, she prefers face-to-face learning. Due to the pandemic though she had many struggles adapting to online learning through zoom classes the past semesters. This brought an effect on her grades and learning experience. Ratcliff has mixed emotions on how she feels about being back on campus with face-to-face classes during the pandemic but in a way, she is glad to be back because this will help her get better grades. Being a full-time student not only keeps Ratcliff busy, but she is also part of TAMUT student organizations, those include the Psychology Club which she has recently been nominated as secretary officer and she is also a member of the National Society of Leadership and Success.

Not only does Ratcliff keep a full schedule with being a full-time student and being a part of student organizations, this semester, but she is also an artist and planning her wedding. Ratcliff does a variety of impressionistic paintings and calligraphy that she just started this summer selling on the Etsy website. She has been painting since her high school days and has created an inventory of items, but it wasn’t until recently she decided to sell them. She has been doing art since her childhood and began her journey in taking art classes as art became an outlet of hers to help cope with her depression and anxiety which she had been diagnosed with within her late childhood at the time. Ratcliff enjoys painting and that is a hobby she plans on sticking to doing throughout finishing her studies and for now.
Besides art, she also likes to hit the gym every week and does some weightlifting.

Navigating Ratcliff’s lifestyle is not easy, and because she is also planning her wedding, and with the pandemic going on there are many things at play that must be planned well. Ratcliff is not your typical college student, because of her busy lifestyle, but she is an outgoing person who is easy to have a conversation with and you can talk to her about anything as to say that is what she will do professionally anyway.
